I then moved to Riff’s texts.
You have no idea how much I want forever with you. And I hate myself for it. It was never supposed to be like this.
I deleted that text too.
I tossed my phone aside.
I walked down to the beach.
My toes sliding easily into the soft sand.
Darkness surrounding me.
The stars above me.
The ocean in front of me.
I hugged myself.
I closed my eyes.
My bedroom door opens.
Remi stands there.
I’m back in bed.
He can read my face.
‘You saw.’
‘Everything.’
He nods.
‘You hit Riff. You were fighting him. Because of me.’
‘He could have gotten you killed. I can’t forgive that.’
‘Remi, can you just listen to me for once? Hear what I have to say?’
‘What? What can you possibly say?’
I want to tell my brother that I have a crush on his former best friend. I want him to understand that I feel a certain way about Riff that I’ve never felt before.
But it’s going to cause more problems.
So I don’t say a word.
I opened my eyes and wiped away tears.
