“Freak show?” Remi asked.

“I’m trying out some new ones here. You giant fuck. Big and slow. Moron.”

“Wow,” Matias said. “Remi isn’t losing his mind. They must have made up.”

“Why do you keep saying it like that?” Remi growled. “Nobody made anything.”

“Something is different,” Reid said.

“No,” Remi said. “Call it a quiet understanding. That’s what it is.”

“In other words, I beat the shit out of him until he cried like a baby,” I said. “He begged me to stop so I gave him some rules to follow.”

“That’s enough,” Remi said.

He lunged for me and I took off, skating down the ice.

Remi followed.

The rest of the guys tried to follow too.

From the bench, Coach cupped his hands around his mouth.

“One punch and you’re both suspended again! I’m not fucking kidding!”

I looked back at Remi. “Better not punch me.”

“Oh, I won’t, Riff,” he said. “Trust me.”

At the other end of the ice I started to make a turn around the goalie net.

That’s when Remi launched himself into me.

I should have figured that’s what he was going to do.

I hit the boards so hard, the thundering boom sent the piece of Plexi-glass falling backward.

I went from hitting the boards to hitting the ice.

My right shoulder was instantly numb.

The wind was knocked out of me.

On my back, on the ice, staring up at Remi.

“Get up,” he said. “Don’t be a pussy.”

He offered his right hand and I grabbed it.

He pulled me to my feet and pulled me toward him.

“You took that hit like a man,” he said. “But you could have gotten out of it.”

“Fuck you,” I said in a breathless voice.

“Save all the fucking for my sister,” Remi said.

He winked and skated away.
