My heart started to pound inside my chest.

Headlights appeared in front of me and I had to shove all the hockey stuff behind me.

Fi hurried to get out of Maggie’s car and rushed to mine.

She wore a hoodie and jeans.

Hair down. No makeup.

She was just… Fiona.

I liked that a lot about her.

“Hey, Griffin,” she said, grinning as she used my full name.

“Fi,” I said with a wink.

I put the car into drive and slammed on the gas pedal.

The car jumped forward and I cut the wheel so I didn’t crash into Maggie.

And then we were off.

Fi gasping, grabbing for the seat.

“Hey,” she said. “What’s wrong?”

I didn’t want to do it but I ended up venting about Polanin.

I let loose.

Yelling. Driving faster by the second.

I knew I sounded like a baby… but it felt good to get it off my chest.

Fi reached across the seat and put her hand to mine.

She moved up to her knees and turned sideways.

“Riff,” she said. “I’m sorry about that. Polanin is a douche. He’s the douchiest douche that ever douched.”

I looked at Fi and smiled. “You know, that actually makes me feel better.”

“Good.”

“You should really put on your seatbelt,” I said. “If anything happens…”

“What’s going to happen?” Fi asked. “We’re together. You said you’d keep me safe, remember?”

The last time we hung out we sat on the hood of my car and watched the stars. We played a game where we pretended Remi knew about us hanging out. And I told Fi I would always keep her safe.

Which I did mean.

It wasn’t a thing about…loveor a relationship.

I cared about her. I’d known her for long time.

She kept staring at me. On her knees. In the passenger seat.
