I nodded. “You’re scrambling.”

“I am! I know I am! Painting! I haven’t painted since…”

She stopped herself.

My jaw tightened.

I turned and walked away.

I grabbed my bag and went into the bedroom.

I threw my bag on the bed and ran my hand through my hair.

That’s it.

That’s all I need to see.

Fiona? Painting?

She bails on a guy. Loses her job.

Now she’s going to crash here and paint? In front of me?

I had my phone in my hand a few seconds later.

Now what?

The plan that made sense would be to tell Fiona to get out of my condo.

The plan in real life?

Abby - sorry to do this last minute but I need to cancel. Something came up. Personal thing. Hope you can forgive me.

I sent the text and then deleted her contact info from my phone.

It started to feel like all those nice and easy rules between Fiona and I were starting to fly out the window.

I tossed my phone to my bed and exited the bedroom.

Fiona had the music back on but much lower.

She painted with a fierce look in her eyes.

Her tongue kept running along her top lip.

That was her serious concentration look.

Her eyes moved from the canvas to mine.

She smiled.

“What do you think, Riff? Want to join?”

“Me? No thanks. I haven’t done any art crap in a long time too.”

“I know. You were a secret artist though. You didn’t want anyone to know.”

I put my finger to my lips. “I still don’t.”
