“I know. I haven’t painted in a long time.”

“Yeah, well, neither have I,” he said. “Not since the accidents.”

That word hit me hard.

Accidents. Plural.

The worst year of my life.

The year I lost so much. Almost lost my own life.

The year I lost Riff too.

Our arrangement worked best when we were naked.

Clothed, it was a little tough.

I had the opening now to just leave.

To tell Riff this was a bad idea. That he was right. That I would leave.

Even if I didn’t leave town, I could leave his condo.

“So you really… you canceled a date for me?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he said. “I’m going to catch a lot of hell for it too. But… whatever.”

“Whatever,” I said. “I’m just picturing it. Big, sexy Griffin. I bet the woman was tall and skinny, right? Probably a model. Nice, perky boobs too. Blue eyes.”

“Did you go through my phone?” Riff asked.

I laughed. “No. Just a guess.”

I slid my hands to the back of his neck and pulled.

My lips brushed against his.

His tongue swept across my bottom lip.

We started to make out in the storage closet.

I dropped down to my feet, breaking the kiss.

I looked up at him.

“Canceling a date,” I whispered. “I feel pressured now, Riff.”

“Pressured? Why?”

“I have to make this worth the time and effort…”

My right hand cupped between his legs.

Riff sucked in a breath and growled. “Don’t you dare fucking tease me right now, sweetheart.”

“You know I don’t tease,” I said. “At least not too much.”

My hand touched the top of his pants and slipped down inside.
