He exhaled a slow breath.

My toes curled tight.

“See you on the trip, Dr. Autumn…”

Chapter Nineteen

JOE

I steppedonto the largest private jet I ever saw and walked the too narrow aisle to grab a seat in the far back, by myself.

“Can you believe Atlas ditched us?” Jago asked.

I froze and looked to my right. “Atlas isn’t here? What’s the plan?”

“He’s getting there himself,” Henry said. “HE didn’t bail on the team.”

“He wanted to travel with his family,” Sebastian said. “Have to respect that. He hates being away from that baby.”

“Can’t blame him,” Rome said. “I wouldn’t want to be a second away from Hazel. Plus, he’s bringing her along. Yum.”

“You’re a piece of shit, Rome,” Sebastian said.

Rome stood up. “Me? Why? Because I think Hazel is a beautiful woman?”

“Sit down, man,” I said, grabbing Rome’s shoulder.

He plopped down and put his feet up on the seat in front of him.

I walked to my seat and sat down.

We all had to take our seats and wait to take off.

I told myself to tread lightly on this road trip.

Lucky enough to be with the team. Unlucky enough to not play hockey.

But I did manage to get Anna sucked into this too.

Speaking of…

I took out my phone.

How’s your flight?

A minute later, Anna replied with a picture.

It wasn’t of her, but of her flight.

All I saw was the familiar hair of Ellen Verwert.

I curled my lip.

“What’s got you pissed off?”

I looked up and saw Rome turned around.

“Nothing,” I said.
