I stumbled but I did not fall.

Behind me the small beam of a flashlight followed.

The voice of the cop (or whoever watches the beach at night) yelled over and over for us to stop.

The lightning got bright.

The thunder got louder.

The few droplets of rain became a steady drizzle.

That only made the rocks more slippery.

I jumped off the last rock, getting in front of Anna.

I turned and opened my arms.

She launched herself at me.

I caught her.

Her body colliding with mine.

My arms around her. Tight.

She looked down at me and grabbed for my face.

By far a perfect moment to share a kiss.

Only we were being chased.

I ran toward the ocean, which seemed stupid to do.

I saw a small opening between two of the rocks.

Room for one person.

But Anna and me?

The only chance we had was squishing together.

Tight.

Hard.

Every inch and curve of her body against mine.

She turned her head and rested it against my chest.

“Be quiet,” I whispered.

“I am,” she whispered. “You be quiet.”

The rain grew harder. Faster.

The thunder rumbling the ground under our feet.

I saw the flashlight shine on the beach.
