I curled up on the couch more than a million times during my time of the month.

I…

I felt nothing toward it.

Toward Steven.

My mind raced circles around one name.

Joe.

It didn’t feel irresponsible at all.

It just felt… fast. Yet good.

As a passing joke to myself, I imagined me asking Joe to help me get my stuff out of Steven’s apartment.

Steven answering the door with Joe standing behind me.

The instant tension.

The fact that Steven would probably think he was capable of hurting Joe.

Then watching Joe squish Steven like an empty soda can.

My office door opened and I pointed at Bethany.

“We’re going on an adventure!” I blurted out.

“I was just going to ask if you wanted something for lunch…”

“Lunch is on me,” I said. “On the go. We’re clear for the afternoon, right?”

“Yes,” Bethany replied. “Day is wide open. What’s going on?”

I suddenly found myself unable to speak.

I can’t drag Bethany into this.

“Okay,” Bethany said. “Too late for a lie now. I see you trying to make one up. Tell me the truth right now.”

“I have to go… where I used to live. With Steven.”

Bethany’s eyebrows lifted. “You need me there?”

“I don’t need…”

“You need me there,” she said. “Let’s go. Here’s what we do. We grab a water or a diet soda for the ride over. No food. No bloat. So you can flaunt your ass in front of him. Let him see what he lost. Plus, your stomach is in a knot. And if you eat right now… remember the burrito incident?”

“That was not nerves,” I said. “That was bad meat.”

“Sure.”

Bethany rolled her eyes.

We had known each other too long.

Way too long.
