Nothing else to say at the moment, I skated down the ice and got my puck out of the net.
I worked on a few small drills.
Puck handling drills.
Focus between my eyes, the hockey stick, and the puck.
But always looking at Anna from the corner of my eye.
Until I finally stopped.
“I don’t want to talk to you,” I said.
“Oh, you poor thing.”
“You really think this is a game.”
“I don’t, Joe. But you don’t get to say what you did and then take off.”
“I didn’t mean what I said. It just slipped out. It was a mistake.”
“We both know that’s not true.”
“Should I call security?” I asked.
“Go ahead. Call whoever you want.”
My jaw tightened.
“Joe,” she said. “You’re wrong, by the way.”
“I’m wrong? Wrong about what?”
“About what you said,” Anna said.
About you breaking my heart, baby? Do you really want to get into this right now?
I started to skate down the ice again.
“You’re not getting away from me,” Anna said.
She stepped out onto the ice.
Wearing shoes.
Her legs went in opposite directions instantly.
She spun around and grabbed for the boards to keep herself from falling.
Of course my instinct was to get to her.
Grab her and hold her.
Keep her from falling.
Then kiss her.
Then…
