“Oh, here we go,” Joe said. “Great.”

“You think I set this up on purpose?”

“Of course you did. Don’t act like you didn’t see my name before you walked into this office.”

“I have a job to do,” I said. “I’m damn good at my job too. If you think you can bully me around by telling lies about the past, good luck. I’ve dealt with worse than you, Joe.”

“Oh, you poor thing,” he said. “Please, sit down. Tell me all your feelings, Anna. Life must have been so hard for you.”

My fingertips began to shake with rage.

I pictured myself clawing that asshole smirk off Joe’s face.

I felt all those years boiling inside me.

All those promises we both made to one another.

Between kisses. Under the stars.

In the bed of his piece of shit pickup truck…

“Look, I’ll be the bigger person here, Anna. Watch this.”

Joe walked to the door and opened it.

“You can’t do that,” I said.

“Oh? I can’t?”

“I’ll call Ellen.”

The left side of Joe’s lip curled.

“You’re required to do this,” I said. “No matter what.”

I stepped toward my bag and reached down into the front pocket and took out one of my cards.

I stuck the card between my right pointer and middle fingers and reached out for Joe.

“This isn’t over, Joe,” I said. “Not by a long shot.”

Joe plucked the card from my fingers. “So this is it? This is your big move? After all these years? What did you think would happen, Anna?”

“I’m just trying to do my job,” I said. “Now, if you want to do yours, shut the door, sit down, and answer my questions.”

“You know, this is what you crazy women dream of. Right? You think you get one of your exes into a room alone. You think you get to ask all these personal questions to get some truths that were never told. But you know what? Look in the mirror. There’s your truths. Last time I checked, I wasn’t the one who got onto that bus, Anna. That was you.”

“Last time I checked…”

Anna, no.

Don’t fall for it.

I swallowed hard. I took a deep breath. “Last time I checked, I was your only chance of getting back on the ice. I hold the key, Joe. It’s my say. Not yours. So go ahead. Make a move.”

I walked back to the chair and picked up my notebook and pen.

I figured I had him right then and there.
