It was too much to watch.

I skated over to her and helped her to her feet.

Then I moved her to the edge of the ice, and off.

I stepped off the ice too.

“We’re done here,” I said.

She grabbed my arm. “Far from done, Joe. Don’t be like this. We have to talk.”

“Just forget about what I said.”

“I can’t do that. Not if you’re going to blame me for everything in your life. That’s what you were doing, right? Blaming me? Saying that I was the one who caused your anger. That I was the one who made it so you could snap and toss a guy through a window. Right?”

I didn’t bother to respond to her.

I walked down the hallway toward the locker room doors.

Anna followed.

Once inside, I sat down and began to take my skates off.

Anna stood just feet away from me.

The both of us in complete silence.

I swore to myself there was nothing left to say.

She wasn’t going to get another word out of me.

There was nothing she could-

I made the mistake of looking at her.

Time felt frozen in place.

“Just tell me if what you said is true,” she said. “I need to know on many levels if that was true. I know you understand that. Not to mention saying something like that and then running off? What did you think I was going to do, Joe?”

I stood up.

Barefoot. Still towering over her.

Sweaty.

Annoyed.

“I thought you were going to do what you did before. Take off and disappear. But at least this time I would be ready for it.”

I touched my chest. Right over my heart.

Was I being honest? Was I being slightly romantic?

That didn’t work for me at all.

That was the kind of stuff Anna did to me.

Pushing me into it.
