Anna sitting up in bed.

Staring at her phone.

Looking scared, tired, and… lonely.

Fuck, why does it feel like I’m losing her all over again?

I walkedinto Bobby’s office and he wasn’t alone.

He also wasn’t stuffing his face with food or acing a little crazy either.

Which meant things were serious.

Very serious.

A man and woman stood near one of the windows, in suits, smiling at me.

“No Ellen?” I asked with a smirk.

Bobby nodded to the two people.

“We represent both the Verwert family and the hockey organization,” the man said. “I’m Clarence. This is Sophia.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” Sophia said in a happy voice.

She offered her right hand.

I didn’t offer mine.

Her back stiffened.

“Joe, they’re on our side,” Bobby said. “On your side. For your best interest here.”

“And what interest is that?” I asked. “Team getting bad press?”

“Well, from a public relations standpoint, any press is good press,” Clarence said. “As long as the story is twisted the right way.”

“There is no twisting,” I said. “I won’t become some corporate puppet.”

“We would never ask that,” Sophia said. “We are just trying to gather all the facts.”

She glanced at Bobby.

Bobby sighed. “Joe, there are charges pending against you.”

“That’s fine. I know what happened.”

“Dragging everyone through something like that…” Clarence said.

He didn’t finish his sentence.

“Joe, don’t be dumb here. Apologize. Make good with this guy. This is an ethical nightmare. I’ll say what the lawyers can’t say. You were supposed to be getting help for your anger issues. And you end up sleeping with the psychologist who is treating you? And then you end up attacking her ex? How does that look?”

“Looks like I was defending a woman’s honor,” I said.

“Which we agree with,” Sophia said. “From a woman’s point of view, I can say that-”

“This Steven guy won’t do a thing,” I said. “Call his bluff. But Anna stays out of it.”
