Suddenly a voice started to speak to her.

Anna didn’t turn, see me, and jump into my arms.

Instead, she screamed and launched herself forward.

She tripped, fell to her knees, then took a handful of sand and threw it at my face.

Most of the sand missed my face.

A few stray particles clung to my right eye.

“Oh, shit, Anna,” I said.

“Joe?” Anna cried out. “What… are…”

I blinked fast, my right eye beginning to fill with tears to get the sand out of there.

Anna took a breath.

Then another.

Her eyes welled up with tears.

I dropped down to one knee.

“Joe,” she said as her chin quivered.

“We fucked this all up, baby, didn’t we?”

“Big time,” she said. “What’s… what’s going on with you?”

I reached for her.

Just me and her…

I offered my hands and she took them.

I stood up and helped her to her feet.

As I pulled her closer to me, she placed her hands to my chest.

Not quite yet.

“I’ll give it all up for you,” I said. “Hockey. Everything. Romantic.”

“That’s stupid. Don’t say stuff like that. This is serious right now.”

“Why does it have to be serious? Look at us. We’re never serious when we’re together.”

“Isn’t that a problem?”

“No, baby. Life is life. It’s going to do what it wants. So we should do what we want.”

“That’s the kind of stuff that ends up with trouble. You’re trouble, Joe. Us together…”

“Trouble?” I asked.

Anna nodded.
