“Not this time,” I said.
I walked up the few large steps onto the clean-smelling bus.
I took a seat in the front.
And my heart began to race faster.
Panic crept through my body.
Okay, Joe. You made your point. I get it. Now… let’s go…
I looked around the bus.
It was just about halfway full.
“Just about ready to get going,” the driver said to himself.
I shook my head.
That can’t happen.
I sat.
I waited.
The minutes crept by.
Some were faster than others.
Then the driver stood up and walked the bus.
Making his final preparations to leave.
I inched closer to the window and looked out.
No sign of Joe at all.
What the hell is he doing?
What’s the point of this?
I still had time to leave the bus myself.
The driver walked by me and sat back down in his seat.
He reached to close the bus door and I popped up.
“Wait,” I said. “I have to get off this bus.”
The driver looked back at me. “You sure?”
“I have to get off this bus right now. Do not close that door.”
I swung out of the seat and as soon as I looked down and out of the open bus door, I saw Joe standing there.
“You can’t leave,” he said. “I know it might the wrong decision, Anna, but you can’t leave. I can’t live without you.”
I nodded. “Well… you could come with me.”
