“It’s going to cost a fortune,” Anna said with a sly grin.

Oh, I love when you act like this, Anna…

“Money is never an issue,” Ellen said. She walked toward me. “I really am looking forward to seeing you back on the ice. We haven’t faced much backlash from what you did. We were prepared for a PR nightmare. That didn’t happen.”

“So then why am I here?” I whispered to Ellen. “My job is to be big and mean and fight.”

“On the ice, Joe. Not in real life. Finish up with Dr. Autumn and we’ll go from there. I’ll show myself out.”

Ellen opened the door and shut it behind her.

I looked at Anna.

“There’s my morning for you,” Anna said. “After sleeping here last night, I wake up to an email that I’m going to be on the road with your hockey team. And then the owner of the-”

“You slept here last night? In your own office? Why?”

“That’s not your concern.”

“Yes, it is,” I said. “I just made it my concern. What happened last night, Anna? Did you not go home? Why not?”

“I’m not talking about my personal life to you.”

“You didn’t seem to mind the last time we talked. Or last night.”

“Joe.”

“What? Are we on the clock now? Should I call you Dr. Autumn?”

“Joe. Please. I’m trying to do the right thing. Okay? You do not want to be involved with-”

“She’s in there with someone!”

Bethany’s voice screamed.

Then the office door opened.

I turned and saw some guy in a suit storming into the office.

Some rich douche-looking guy who looked like he needed a punch in the mouth.

At first I thought it was Anna’s landlord.

But then she said the name…

“Steven, you can’t be here.”

But Steven was here.

He looked at me and nodded.

And he went right toward Anna.

I felt like grabbing his shoulder and pulling him back.

It’s my time, limp dick.

“Joe, please excuse us,” Anna said.
