“What I need to do is heal these burns,” Delta snarled.

Screeching tires sounded behind me. A dark SUV stopping and shoving someone out in front of the gate. They fell, limp, to the ground.

“Clementine.” Skyla ran barefoot for the gate.

Damn it.

I sprinted after her, pushing with all my fae strength. But my baby girl had fae speed too. She made it beyond the gate and every magical protection we had before I could catch her.

She fell to her knees beside her friend. I already smelled the blood. The SUV was still there. My heart stopped, and I pointed my gun at the car. “Skyla, get inside the gate.”

“She’s hurt. I have to get her—”

“GET INSIDE THE GATE.NOW.”

Skyla stared at me for a second, startled. Then she looked around, realizing where she was, and she ran back. I scooped up the unconscious redhead and got her inside the circle of our protection. The wheels squealed again as the car peeled out.

“Rocketman,” I called. “Get her to the infirmary. Work her up, don’t let her die.”

He took her gently in his arms and went.

“Bridge.”

“Pres?”

“Take three riders with you. I need a report on the Crimson Petal. I want you back in half an hour.”

“Got it.”

“I want every prospect on a bike, and I want every person in that SUV back hereNOW.”

The gate creaked open and the roar of engines filled the space. I grabbed Skyla’s arm and dragged her toward the infirmary. The small building near the church was unassuming, exactly how it was meant to be. As both King and President I prepared for every eventuality, including being attacked. Making the infirmary the least likely target was a part of that.

“Are you in pain?” I ground out.

Her heels were gone, and she had to run to keep up with my speed. “A little. I’m fine.”

“Good.”

I whirled her around and had her up against the wall in the darkness. “Do you have any idea what you just did?” My voice was nearly unrecognizable.

“I went for my friend. If you think I’m going to apologize for that—”

“The SUV was still fucking there, Sky. Right behind you, and you’re too quick for your own good. They could have grabbed you before I got there because youran outside the wards.” I grabbed her throat, intentionally not being gentle about it. “Do you know how long it takes to make someone fae-struck?”

She swallowed beneath my hand, and I didn’t let her speak. “It takes seconds. And you already know you don’t need a fae to do it.” The black market teemed with ways to take someone’s mind—both voluntarily and not—for a period of time. They called it fae-struck because our race started it, but it was so much bigger than that. “It can be a potion or a spell on a trigger, and you would have been gone.”

“But Clementine—”

“Who do you think I am?” I thundered. “Am I a king who leaves bleeding women in the street?”

Shadows seeped from my skin, encasing us in darkness. She could still see me though them, and the true realization of what could have happened was written on her face. Feral energy spiked under my skin. I needed to go and protect and lead, but every instinct in me needed to feel her.

“Spread your legs.”

She did without question, gasping under the hand pinning her to the wall. I didn’t let her go, ripping my belt open with the other hand and shoving this godsdamn tease of a dress over her hips. My cock was so hard it ached, and I drove it deep inside her.

Immediately, the roaring beast in my head quieted. Myâmmelunewas safe, impaled on my cock. Her moans and my grunting growls were loud in the shadowy space we filled. I fucked her hard, lifting her feet off the ground so her legs wrapped around my hips.
