“No, it was in my purse. Charlie had it.”

“Hum.” She sipped her wine. “You know he fired Dick last night.”

I blinked. “Wait. What?” I took a gulp of my wine. “Why would he do that?”

“Because Dick had been lying to him, too. He swore up and down that it was his song and you stole it.”

“Of course he did, but Noah believed him.” I leaned back against my couch. “I can’t believe I let them both scam me.”

We drank in silence for a minute.

“Did Noah act like he liked you?” she asked. “When you kissed under the mistletoe?”

“I can’t believe you saw that.” I covered my eyes with my hand.

“Oh, girl, everyone saw that.” She turned to me. “Seriously, did he seem interested?”

“Yes, but what does it matter now? Just shows what a bigger fool I was.”

“Because he is interested.”

I started to argue and she held up her hand. “Remember what Liam and I were saying about Noah being honest to a fault?”

“Well, you were wrong about that.” I pouted. I didn’t like myself this way, but I certainly had a right.

“He wouldn’t lie about his feelings,” Justine insisted.

I scowled. “But he could lie about being Santa and steal my song?”

“If the label doesn’t release a hit, it’s going under,” Justine said quietly. “Noah bought up our label because of hits like Dick.”

“So?”

“So our label is closing and Noah might get fired.”

“Fired? But he’s the CEO.”

“And it was his decision to bring in our label and make a go of it.” She took a swallow. “I’m afraid we’re a bit of a disappointment to the big wigs.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, putting my hand on hers. “I guess I didn’t realize. I mean, Dick talked about the takeover, but . . .”

She shrugged. “Well, how would you know? Sparks Entertainment has to make some hard decisions sometimes too but they are family based. Noah’s company is different.”

“Oh.”

“That’s why I figure he has to like you a lot.”

“Because . . .”

“He fired Dick, gave up on our label, and is at risk of losing his job . . . and he doesn’t even get the girl in the end.” She sighed. “Sounds like a bad song.”

It did. I couldn’t help feeling a little guilty. I hadn’t known there was so much going on behind the scenes. I still hated Dick and I’d never give him my song. But I was sorry that it caused so much trouble for Noah.

“Maybe I’ve got a bit of a crush on Santa, too.”

“Maybe you do,” Justine said.

I covered my mouth with my hand. I hadn’t said it aloud, had I? Oh crap. “But I should be furious with him.”
