“Of course.”

“Unless you want to do more.”

There was a long pause, full of unsaid words. “I’m not…Understand...I…”

Could this gentle soul possibly be the surly man I’d first met? Laying the pipe on the hearth, I crawled in his direction. “Samhain is the day after tomorrow, and from what I can tell, the world might end at the stroke of midnight. Let us enjoy each other this evening.”Because we might not have another chance.

He exhaled with something like relief. “I would like that.”

I reached him, putting a hand on each knee. “Where shall I begin?”

“My…inexperience has me at a loss, so perhaps we should move to the bedroom.”

My grin would have made a blind man blink. “Perhaps we should.”

I scrambled to my feet and reached for his hand. Our fingers intertwined and together we went to the bedroom, leaving the fire to burn itself out.

It’s possible I felt a twinge of guilt, not for seducing him, but for neglecting the considerable problems we faced. At the same time, I was heartily tired of feeling frightened. In one way or another, fear had been weighing on me since I left San Francisco, and for this island of time, I wanted to let everything go.

The door was locked, no one knew where we were, and the anonymous voice in my head had quieted.

I closed the bedroom door behind us and turned to face Rafe Gallagher.

The only light came from a triangle of grey where the thin moonlight snuck under the overlapping window curtains. We didn’t need any more than that, and anyway, the darkness equalized things. The bed was a dark mass in the center of the floor, with what I assumed were very fine pieces of wooden furniture placed along the walls.

Truly, though, all my attention was on Rafe.

He was a mere shadow in the darkened room. First, I reached for his glasses, shushing him when he gasped in surprise. From there, I moved to his shirt, delicately undoing the buttons closest to his throat. His smoky herbal scent intoxicated me, and my breath came faster.

“Where’s the dirt?” I didn’t want him to lose his composure while we were…

He brought it from a pocket.

“Will you be okay without it for a little while?”

Rafe put a hand on either side of my waist, holding me in place. “As long as you’re here. Your touch, your taste, your glorious spirit will sustain me.”

“So much to live up to,” I murmured. If I met that black gaze, I’d come undone. Instead, I paid careful attention to the buttons on his shirt, sliding each through the fabric hole with trembling fingers. His breath came quicker and I paused for a moment to press a kiss at the base of his throat. His skin tasted of salt and he shivered in a most satisfying way.

“I never thought something like this could happen.”

I grinned against his skin, his soft chest hair brushing my chin. “You’ve had other things on your mind.” I moved lower, sinking to my knees and unbuttoning his fly. He wore nothing under his trousers.

“What are you—”

I cut off his words by taking his prick in my hands. “I’m going to show you something.”And make very sure you enjoy every single moment.

He’d been firm when I reached him, but now he was stiff and hard. “You can’t,” he said, his voice more of a wheeze, though the grip he had on my shoulders made it impossible to move away.

I wrapped my lips around the head of his prick, running my tongue across the slit.Oh yes, I most certainly can.

I swallowed him further. He whimpered, one hand twisting my hair, as if he couldn’t decide whether to hold me in place or pull me away. I held the base of his shaft, my other hand teasing his balls. From here, his scent was less smoke and more herbal. I inhaled deeply, trying to squirrel that memory away.

“This—”

Whatever he’d meant to say was lost when I pulled off, then swallowed him down again.

“Vincent,” he gasped. “You undo me.”
