“Night.”

I watched as he glanced over at the windows.

“They keep them covered from the outside, so I keep the drapes closed. It’s been like this since the day the sun went out.”

“Maybe we can get that fixed for you.”

“How?”

“I’m going to have a seat. If you’d like, you can join me. I won’t take your lamp.”

He moved through my room and sat at the small table in the corner. I didn’t want to give in, but I was so high from the sedatives just standing was making me dizzy.

I eyed him cautiously as I took a seat. “Who are you?”

“Leo Rand.”

“You said that.”

“Who are you really?”

“There is some information I’d like to share with you, but first I have a few questions.”

“About what?”

“You.”

“What do you need to know about me that Miles can’t tell you?”

“I want to know if they are taking care of you. Was your last meal dinner?”

“I’m sorry. I don’t think I understand why any of that matters to you. None of the other staff has given a crap about anything that has happened to me here. None of them have even stepped foot in this room. They stand out front and make sure I stay put. Isn’t that your job, too?”

“Not necessarily.”

“What did they serve you for dinner?”

“The same thing I get for every meal. A cup full of meds, a glass of water, and a peanut butter sandwich. The bastards can’t even spring for jelly.”

“Every meal is the same?”

“Yes.”

“How many pills are in the cup?”

“Usually two.”

“What do they look like? Anything you recognize?”

“No. They are just little white pills. The woman who brings my food doesn’t leave until she’s seen me take them and hiding them in my mouth doesn’t work either, so don’t worry, I’ve given in.”

“Do you have any other water throughout the day?”

“The sink in the bathroom.”

Leo stood and walked to the bathroom. He disappeared inside for only a minute, then came back, “Well, at least you have access to privacy there.”

“Are you sure? It seems he always knows what I’m doing. I mean, those are pretty obvious, but it doesn’t make sense that he knows every little thing.” I said as I pointed to the cameras in the corners of my room.
