“This isn’t going to take long, is it? I’m starving.”

“Can you please focus? You are like a little kid that has a date with the candy store tonight.”

“And you’re surprised why?”

“I’m not, I’m just.… fuck Noah, you make me crazy.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Come on.”

I made my way down the side of the room while Noah headed straight for the center table where Carter was sitting. The general public wasn’t there, but a handful of tables had people playing games. I knew they all had to work for the guys that ran this place. They had guaranteed us back up and no witnesses that would be a problem. Sometimes having Dante Corsetti as your previous boss really paid off. I watched as Noah reached out and shook Carter’s hand. A rage built in me that I hadn’t expected. I wanted Carter dead, of course, but this had become more than a job and now I couldn’t get the visions out of my head of him on top of Talia. I pulled the burner phone I had in my pocket out and looked at the time. I hadn’t heard from her at all, which was a good sign, but I’d give anything to hear her voice.

“You must be the big man around here,” Noah said in a booming voice that was so ridiculously fake it made me cringe.

“I hear the same about you. I’m Miles Carter.”

“George Washington, nice to meet you.”

“I’m sorry, your name is what?”

“George, George Washington. You can call me Georgie.”

My brother, the idiot, was having the time of his life while half the people in the room just looked at each other, trying to figure out who the fool I had brought with me was. I caught the attention of one guy who used to be on my payroll at Carter’s estate and got a small nod, showing me we did have a couple of friends on the inside. Noah took a seat and pulled out a wad of cash, which the dealer began exchanging for chips, and I made my way around the back of Carter. He was so confused by Noah’s behavior he hadn’t even noticed me, which was probably a good thing. I stood by the bar and watched a few hands, waiting for Carter to get himself comfortable with what was going on.

“So how long are you in town for, Georgie? I’ve got a few women who would eat you up.”

“That right? I heard you were a married man.”

“Me? Nah. I bought a bitch to marry, but she became more trouble than she was worth.”

“How’s that?”

“Real feisty whore. Turned one of my guards against me. Doesn’t matter, though. She won’t be around much longer.”

I watched as my brother went to reach for his hammer, but slowly shook my head behind him. I needed to know for sure that this ended with Carter.

“Took care of her, did ya?” Noah asked, leaning in like he was interested in the answer.

Carter raised his bet, then beckoned for the waitress to bring him another drink before he answered. “Hired some men to take care of it. She thought she was smart and ran out of the country, but I found her.”

“Where’s she at now?” Noah asked as he moved around a couple of cards in his hand.

“New York City. Flew back last week.”

“I guess you lucked out.”

“It’s not luck Georgie, it’s business. I can’t have one of my possessions running around telling lies to people and tarnishing my name.”

“Business… right.”

“What did you say you do for a living?”

“Me? I kill people.”

Noah’s timer had gone off, and he was done. Time to finish this shit. Noah threw his cards in Carter’s face and reached for his hammer. Before the man knew what had happened, Noah crushed his fingers from a swing so hard and fast I could barely see the tool move through the air. I lifted my gun and aimed for the man right in front of me. The other two guys I knew from the estate raised their weapons and took out the two others standing there.

Carter looked up at me as I stepped into his line of sight. Everyone in the room was standing now, many of whom had their hands on their own guns.
