"Especially if they have a rocket launcher," Ice said.

Without glancing over at him I said, "Is that likely?"

"Actually, yes. Bell has an arsenal of all sorts of shit. It's unlikely he or any of his people could get it out and operational this quickly though."

"That's good to know." It was. I suspected a rocket launcher would give us a very unfair disadvantage. Not to mention make a mess out of the streets of Sydney.

"Come on, Princess." Mannix grabbed my hand. We weaved back and forth as we ran to the car and around to the other side of it.

"Get in," he urged. He yanked the back door open and gave me a shove. At the same time, he reached into the foot well and grabbed out three guns. He tossed two to Ares and Ice.

I scrambled inside and stayed down low, while the guys positioned themselves at the front and back of the car. The driver joined Ares near the back, his own gun in his hand.

"Stay down out of sight," Mannix ordered, waving at me to duck down as small as I could. "Don't freak out. We've got you. I promise." He left the door open but moved away.

I hated not being able to see anything, but I hated the idea of being shot even more, so I did what I was told. As for not freaking out, I couldn't make any guarantees.

There was a very real and painful possibility we might all die right here on the streets of one of the most affluent parts of Sydney. What would the news have to say about us?

Oh, right. Nothing. The Bell family or the Brantleys, or even Leo, would pay a shit load of money to cover the whole thing up. By the time they were done, the people living on the street would believe they imagined the entire thing. Or they'd be paid well enough to forget.

Something hit the side of the car and pinged. Bullets, I winced. Each one made a dent that cracked the plastic interior without passing all the way through.

Yet.

I looked up through the window as Ares took aim. His long fingers twitched as he pulled the trigger. His face was a study in concentration and determination. If this wasn't so scary, it would be hot.

Okay, who was I kidding? It was definitely hot. He knew what to do with that gun and he wouldn't hesitate to kill any of the people coming after us. None of the guys would hesitate. Hell, for all I knew this wasn't their first shootout. Maybe not even their thirteenth. They might be a regular occurrence in the life of Mannix, Ice and Ares. If I was ever going to reconsider my life choices, it would be right now.

It's a bit late for that, I told myself. I was curled up in the footwell of the car that was being shot at. And it was basically my fault, because I was the one who came up with the idea of putting a virus on Bell's computer in the first place.

Had they found it already? Or had Lila Bell and the Brantley twins betrayed us? If I died without knowing the answer to that, I'd be pissed off.

I shifted around to get comfortable. My hand brushed past something hard and cold. I felt around until I curled my fingers around the cool steel.

Another gun.

I'd never used one, but how difficult could it be? I hated the idea of being vulnerable and I didn't want to be a sitting duck or a damsel in distress.

I wanted to be one of them, by their side no matter what. I wasn't just a nerd girl who did gymnastics in her spare time. I was a badass nerd girl who belonged to these three beautiful guys. None of us were going down without a fight.

Unless you're talking about the good kind of going down, which right now I wasn't. That could come later. And so would we.

Yeah, nerves were jumbling my thoughts, but I snatched up the gun and slipped back out of the car.

The road was rough under my feet, cracked and broken, even in this part of the city. Part of me regretted kicking off my heels, but I couldn't have run as fast in them anyway.

I'd suffer the discomfort for a little while. It was better than being dead.

"Beautiful Kennedy, what are you doing?" Ice asked without so much as looking at me.

"I thought I'd help." I moved over beside him, my head and body low, and looked out over the street. At least a dozen people were headed our way, each moving slowly and carefully. They had us outnumbered, but we had a car to hide behind. Surely that meant we were in a good place. Right?

Yeah okay, I'm not that naïve, but it was a better barricade than none. Wishing for an armoured tank right now wouldn't make one appear.

"Give me that." Ice grabbed the gun out of my hand.

Before I could protest he said, "The safety is still on." He clicked something and handed the gun back. "Remember to aim it at the bad guys. That's anyone who isn't us."
