I had felt a warmth in my chest when I watched Enrique walk away, a little calmer now that his debts had been forgiven for the time being.
I turn to Felix, surprised. If this had been my father, the outcome would have been quite ... different.
“I had no idea you would do that,” I say, barely able to believe what happened.
He smiles, amused. “It’s a bit against our policy, but I saw the situation.
“We have to remember one thing above all else,” he says softly, his hand on mine now.
“We protect family, no matter what. Money is nothing compared to family.”
His voice is full of emotion, a side of him I hadn’t seen before.
“Hardly any of the rules matter now,” he says, his eyes fixed on mine.
“I would have done the same if I was Enrique. Beg, borrow, steal. Even if I couldn’t pay it back. Wouldn’t you?”
“I would,” I whisper, all the while thinking, someday, I wish to have a family with a man like Felix.
Chapter 13
FELIX
Idon’tknowwhathaving a first day at work is like, but I imagine it would be harrowing.
Which is why I’m in the kitchen at seven a.m., cooking breakfast for Emily.
Emily walks in, and I momentarily forget my trail of thought.
She’s dressed in a silky robe that barely covers her curves, her hair tousled from sleep.
She gives me a sleepy smile before taking a seat at the table.
“Good morning,” she says, her voice still husky from just waking up.
“Good morning,” I reply, turning down the heat on the stove. “You hungry?”
“Starving,” she says with a smile. “You cook breakfast?”
“Icookedbreakfast,” I correct her. “You know, with it being your first day and everything.”
“Wow,” she says, giving me this look of affection that makes me nervous.
One day in, and already the lines are getting blurred.
“Don’t get used to it,” I say, trying to minimize the effort.
Emily chuckles softly, taking a sip of her coffee.
“I won’t. But thank you,” she adds, her eyes still shining with appreciation.
I nod. “Get dressed. We leave at eight.”
Half an hour later, she meets me in the driveway.
She cleans up well, transitioning from the girl in the robe to this super sleek stallion.
If I were part of her team, I would know better than to fuck with her.
