I paused. Looking at my closed office door, I shut my eyes and sighed. “Oh holy hell.”

Hollie

The tone of Lucas’s voice was lower than normal—a clear indication that he knew I’d put a spell on him. I ignored the million questions I wanted to ask him. Did he feel different? Had he noticed it right away? Was he ready to admit the truth?

“Hollie, I’m bringing Matt home for dinner.”

Frowning, I said, “Matt? Okay. But I thought you wanted to plan out what we were going to grill for the Fourth of July party.”

“I do. We will. I’ve got a lot to talk to you about, so I’m leaving now. See you in a bit.”

Something was wrong. Very wrong.Shit. Shit. Shit.

“Okay, I love you. Be careful driving.”

“Love you too.”

The call ended, and I looked over at Lucy, Sarah, and my mother. Sarah clearly saw the worry on my face, because she said, “Well?”

Lucy and Mom exchanged a look. It hadn’t taken Lucy or my mother long to piece together the one-sided conversation—plus I was sure the covert glances between Sarah and I weren’t helping.

“You didn’t,” Lucy said. Turning to look at Sarah, she asked, “You helped her?”

“I had to! I was also curious to see if Lucas has the gift!” Sarah stated.

Lucy closed her eyes and my mother sighed.

“Let me guess, something went wrong?” Lucy asked.

I wrung my hands together. “I’m not sure. Lucas didn’t seem very happy, and he said he was bringing Matt over here.”

“Matt?” Sarah asked. “Why?”

“I don’t know, but when he asked that stupid dreaded question…what did you do,”I said in a lowered voice, “I had a feeling he wasn’t talking about himself.”

Sarah gasped and put her hand to her mouth. We all turned to look at her.

“What is it?” I asked.

“A few hours after the three of us cast the spell today, I ran into Matt. As we were talking, I had this strange, out-of-body experience. Something told me to kiss him, and I did. It was like I couldn’t even control myself. How scary is that?” Sarah said with a nervous laugh.

“You wanted the kiss,” Mom said while Lucy nodded.

“What?” Sarah let out another bubble of something that sounded more like a moan than a laugh. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

My mother crossed her arms over her front and gave my sister a knowing look. “No one has the power to make another person do something they don’t want to do by using magick. You know this better than anyone, Sarah.”

“Mom, are you saying Iwantedto kiss Matt and made myself do it?”

Mom and Lucy exchanged a look. “It sounds to me like it was Matt who wanted it,” Mom said. “He wished it, and you wanted to do it—so there you go.”

Sarah shot her gaze over to me. “Did we use the wrong hair?”

“Wait, I’m so confused. So if Matt wished it and Sarah wanted it, then it made it happen?” I asked.

Lucy nodded. “Clearly, Sarah must have been thinking about someone entirely different when you cast the spell.”

“No, that can’t be! We used Lucas’s hair. Kristin said she got hair from Lucas, not Matt.”
