However, this male doesn’t seem to care. He ignores my defiance and merely licks his lips, his elongated canines glinting in the light. Instead of putting him off, my challenge is making him even more eager.

Gripping the armrest tightly, my eyes dart around the room, looking for my escape, but feeling like this, I know I won't get far. Just the idea of standing and walking to the exit seems like a mammoth task, let alone with a wolf on my heels.

Ross’s exasperated face calling me stubborn flashes into my mind, and I grimace. Maybe he’s right. There’s no way I can get out of this on my own. I need help. And in this situation, Ross is the perfect person.

MAYA: Ross? I don’t feel too good

ROSS: You didn’t look great this morning, but I thought it was due to, ahem, lack of sleep? If you know what I mean!

MAYA: Can you come and help me?

ROSS: Oh shit. That bad? Of course. Oh, hold on, someone’s here–

The mind-link connection severs and my heart stutters in my chest. Ross would never have cut off our conversation like that without finding out where I am and what I need. My friend is in trouble. He must be unconscious, or worse, if I can’t re-establish the link.

Keeping my eyes trained on the unknown wolf, I stand and move swiftly toward the lifts. I need to find Ross. He’s the only person I can trust to keep me safe right now, and I need to check on him. Everything in me is screaming to run, the threat of imminent danger making adrenaline flood my system. The male wolf stalks in my direction, keeping his head low and his pace steady to avoid attracting any attention as he follows me. Cursing, I grip my lower belly as the ache there intensifies, and I’m forced to stop and throw out a hand to keep myself from falling over. His light footsteps get closer and closer. I shut my eyes, pressing my back to the cool wall, hidden from sight around the corner where he’ll turn.

He slows down as he approaches cautiously. His footsteps are so quiet they’re almost silent, but his ragged breathing gives him away as he steps into the narrow lift area. I lash out as his face appears, delivering a sharp blow to his nose with the heel of my hand. Gripping his shirt with both fists, I press him to the wall, kneeing him hard in the balls. It’s not pretty, but it’s effective.

“Aw, fuck,” he groans, one hand flying to his face where his broken nose pumps blood and the other to his groin. His face pales and he looks like he might vomit.

Good.

“What do you want?” I ask, furious that he’s following me. It’s tempting to bolt, but I’m concerned he could have something to do with whatever happened to Ross. This man might have information I need. Gradually, the wolf fades from his glowing eyes as the pain breaks his focus and allows the man inside to push to the surface. He blinks down at me through watery eyes, shaking his head to clear the animalistic thoughts still lingering there. When he reaches up and touches his crooked nose, wincing, he doesn’t look as angry as I expected. He looks tormented.

“Your heat is driving my wolf wild. Where is your fucking mate? Why are you even down here? You must be crazy!”

My heat.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Panic surges through me, constricting my breathing. Shaking my head, I don’t answer him. I can’t. Backing away slowly, I press the call button at my back repeatedly, and glance out toward the lobby, where yet another pair of glowing eyes meet mine.

There’s another male in the lobby and he’s scented me. I’m a lone, unmarked female, not from the local pack, but of a desirable alpha bloodline, who’s in heat, unguarded. I’m a disaster waiting to happen.

This cannot be happening. We haven’t even had sex?

But then… Nathan’s cock, just the head, pushing past my entrance right before I kicked him away. The memory has my thighs clenching and my pussy weeping. Was that enough to trigger my heat?

He’s my mate. Nathan’s really my mate.

I wish I had let him take me. Now, it’s all I want. My skin crawls and my insides clench with the need to feel him buried deep inside me.

The wolf opposite me follows my eyeline and sees where I’m looking and who I’m looking at. He pushes away from the wall and growls, positioning himself in front of the lift to block the new male's approach. This other wolf is younger, and he looks completely out of control with lust, his eyes blazing an inhuman yellow as the muscles in his jaw ripple, the first signs of a shift taking hold.

“Get out of here. I’ll hold him off, but I’m warning you, the second my nose clears, and I can scent you again, I’ll be on your tail.”

I nod, understanding that he doesn’t want to. He’s warning me before his wolf takes back control. When the doors open behind me, I almost weep with relief. I step backward, never turning my back on the powerfully built male defending me, but only for as long as the blood in his nose keeps my scent from his wolf.

“Where’s Ross?” I ask, holding the metal doors apart, trying to be brave even though I itch to get away from here.

“How the hell would I know where your mate is?” he spits, and I see possessive jealousy flare in his eyes for a split second before he regains control. “Go!”

There’s no deceit. He doesn’t know me, doesn’t know anything about Ross, or what’s going on. This wolf isn’t afterme. He wants me to leave before something bad happens.

The doors slide shut and I sag against the wall, cringing back when I hear a loud thump and a struggle outside as I'm whisked away. Removing myself from their presence should allow their heads to clear enough to break the spell. Hopefully, they won't pursue me.

I make it to Ross’s room and stumble to the door, knocking hard, looking over my shoulder and praying no other wolves appear. Over and over, I try to mind-link him, but there’s nothing. Trying to hear past the blood rushing through my ears, I think I can make out a heartbeat inside, but is it Ross or someone else?
