“All I wanted was for Toby to be freed. Then I was going to take a long holiday and never come back. It’s not my fault it got messy.”

Kim says it matter-of-factly, as if Leah almost drowning and one of our guards nearly dying after being stabbed were trivial complications in her mission to free her lover.

“How could you do this? We’re practically family. After everything Toby did to us?”

Kim scoffs, and I see anger flash in her cold eyes. There is no remorse.

“You took his pack away from him! None of you ever let me show you what I'm capable of. Toby's going to make me his Luna.”

“Toby’s dead. And even if he wasn’t, it’s not his pack! He already had a mate.”

Kim shakes her head vehemently, pointing the gun straight at my head now as she gets angrier and angrier with me for poking holes in the lies he’s fed her.

“He’ll be back for me. And she rejected him, Leila told me. I felt the bond. All he has to do is accept her rejection and we can be together.”

She’s delusional, but I won’t get anywhere pointing that out. She's in so deep she needs to cling to the notion he was telling the truth, or she's ruined her life for nothing. If she believes for a second he was playing her, it would all fall apart.

I need to come up with a plan, but other than waiting for the cavalry to arrive and praying she only hurts me, I am drawing a blank. What is she waiting for?

Something intense crawls under my skin, making me shift in my seat. Suddenly, I’m anxious and fidgety. My head pounds and my wolf howls, getting more worked up by the second. My permanent semi becomes a raging hard-on and I twist in my binds, even more desperate to get out of these cuffs.

My wolf isn’t worried about getting shot. He just wants to get free.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Kim says, incredulous, before a wicked grin curls around her lips and she walks back a few steps, close enough to the door that she can be heard outside without shouting.

“Come on in Maya. Your pack might be excellent at sneaking around, but your scent is too strong to hide.”

I groan as my canines shoot down, nicking my lip, and saliva pools in my mouth as Maya’s delicious scent fills my mind. Fuck. Need grips me, and I attempt to jump from my seat, almost toppling the chair to the ground in the process.

Maya’s in heat.

This can’t be happening.

As I watch with bated breath, the door opens and Maya walks in. Or maybe I should say she falls in. One hand slides along the wall as she enters, stumbling to her knees far enough inside for Kim to shut the door behind her.

Maya’s wolf flashes in her eyes as her gaze meets mine, and she whines a needy sound that goes straight to my balls. We both inhale sharply, another whimper coming from Maya, as a powerful possessive rumble starts deep in my chest. If I wasn’t cuffed to this damn chair, I’d fall to my knees and crawl to her.

I need to get to her. I need to bury myself between her thighs and take away her pain. She’s panting and squirming, completely overheating, and I know in my heart she needs me to make it better. We might not be marked but the fledgling bond is there and I can feel her agony.

“Maya,” I whisper, my heart shattering into a million pieces at the sight of my precious mate. She’s sweating and one hand clutches her abdomen as she shuffles further toward me. Kim keeps the gun trained on her, clever enough to stay out of Maya’s reach, as she pulls out her phone and taps out a quick message before she pockets it again.

My mate needs my help, but I’m powerless to do anything about it. I can barely focus on anything else. Every hair on my body stands on end.

“Why are you doing this?”

For a moment, I think I see a flicker of guilt. Kim is still in there, but she shrugs as though she couldn’t care less.

“Just following orders and getting some pay back at the same time. Although this little curveball might work to our advantage. Kill three birds with one stone, if you will.”

CHAPTER 31

NATHAN

It feels like it’s been days since Kim trapped us in this room together, when I know it has only been hours. My poor, sweet mate lies curled up on the floor, her back to both Kim and I, one hand pressed between her thighs to hold back the aching need. Her entire body is rigid with the effort of fighting her urges. I know she doesn’t want to give in with Kim watching. She must be in agony. Her cheeks and chest are flushed and rivulets of sweat run down her chest. She needs release to take her pain away.

“At least let her sit in a cold shower, Kim. Your issue is with me.”

Spitting the words out, I’m not able to hide my fury at the torture she’s inflicting on Maya. Maya has donenothingto her. She has me. If she’s trying to hurt our pack, surely I’m a better scalp than Maya. Kim ignores me, tapping away on her phone from her position in the armchair. For the life of me, I can't work out what she wants. I'm getting more and more concerned about what she has planned with each minute that passes.
