Fuck, Malachi wanted her so fucking much.

“We can do that,” he said, voice gruff, glancing at her.

Joy looked sharply at him. Her grip on her dagger tightened. “You can go into his dreams?”

“The dreamscape is a part of the Veil,” Malachi said. “Allnicquiris can traverse it.” It had been one of the many ways thePriesthad had him find gullible humans willing to sell their soul to a demon.

“Delicious.” Joy’s lips stretched. She turned her focus backonthe sleeping man, her expression and her scent doing serious things to Malachi’s libido. “Let’s do it.”

The man was dreaming of what seemed to be his secondary school. The scene was fuzzy in the way some dreams were, but the man was in the middle, surrounded by friends, having a conversation that didn’t make sense, as these dreams often didn’t.

“What would you like to do?” Malachi whispered.

They were hidden within the man’s dreamscape, thanks to Malachi’s powers.

“Can you only travel the dreamscape? Or can you … manipulate it?”

“I can manipulate it to an extent,” Malachi said. “But it is easier for me if the dream has some relation to their actual life.” That way, the human’s subconscious automatically took control.

Joy grinned. “That’s perfect.”

After Joy told him what she wanted, Malachi closed his eyes and pulled from the aether. It took a lot more power to manipulate the dreamscape, but for her, Malachi was beginning to realise he would do anything.

He opened his eyes, and they were standing in the bar, exactly as Joy had described. Joy’s clothes had changed; she was dressed in plain blue jeans, a pink t-shirt with her favourite cartoon on it, and plain grey sneakers.

Joy slipped into her role in the dream easily, heading to the bar and ordering a drink from the nondescript person behind it.

The man’s subconscious remembered this moment in reality, of course, grasping at Malachi’s direction with rapt eagerness. Malachi saw the corner of Joy’s lips curl up, like she knew it, too.

The man was staring hungrily at Joy sitting alone at the bar, ignoring the rest of their co-workers as they cracked jokes and got increasingly drunk. He moved closer to her, his expression melting into something innocent.

Malachi’s stomach felt rotten, curdled like spoilt milk.

Joy was the perfect actress as her victim sidled up to her, saying something that made her laugh shyly. Malachi wondered if this was how it had happened. Hesyphonedmore power from the aether so Joy could slip something into the man’s drink.

The man saw it happen, clear as day. Malachi watched him frown, the lights in the dreamscape dimming. But despite this, he still took the drink, his subconscious overlaying the moment with what had happened in reality—that it had been the other way round.

The dreamscape flickered, the scene changed, and they were in an unfamiliar flat. Malachi bit back a snarl when he saw that the man was on top of Joy, even though this had been part of Joy’s plan.

He clenched his jaw and practically yanked from the aether. Their roles abruptly switched, and Joy was the one on top. She sat back in the man’s lap, grinning ferally down at him.

He smiled up at her, but his expression seemed slightly confused.

“Something wrong, pretty boy?” Joy asked sultrily, stroking her hands down his chest.

He tried to move, his eyes widening with alarm when he found that he couldn’t. Malachi felt drunk on the heady scent of Joy’s viciousness.

“What—?” His mouth clicked shut when he realised Joy was abruptly holding a dagger. “What? Joy—what are you doing? What’s going on? Let me go!”

“No.”

She swung the dagger down.

They were abruptly ejected from the dreamscape as Joy’s victim shot awake in the real world, crying out and clutching his chest. He didn’t notice Joy and Malachi—not yet, collapsing back onto his mattress, panting hard.

Joy gripped her dagger hard, waiting, waiting. She watched as he reached underneath the pillows for his phone and checked the time. Then he fell back onto his bed.

Joy silently counted.
