One of the creatures launched toward as us Teris dove through the gap. My heart dropped into my stomach as we fell, but he landed easily, rolling with me effortlessly before popping back up and jogging away.

The tree reverted to its original form as soon as we were through the gap, and I couldn’t even hear the snarls of the creatures we’d left behind.

Teris let out a harsh breath as he looked around the cave we’d landed in. It wasn’t massive, but there was a thick river or stream at one side of the space that seemed to be flowing in a circle. On another side, I saw a crack in a wall that I thought we might be able to fit through.

At least, IthoughtI saw a crack.

My mind was spinning like I couldn’t believe.

He set me on my feet, and I nearly face-planted until he caught me by the waist, balancing me.

“You look like shit,” Teris growled at me. “Can those things use Vevol’s magic?”

“It’s not Vevol’s anymore, it’s the fae’s,” I whispered.

“So they can’t.”

“No.” I closed my eyes.

My ass landed on the ground a moment later, and my back was up against a stone wall. I nearly fell over anyway.

“Stay awake,” Teris grunted, before he let go of me.

His hands were on my face a moment later, squeezing my chin lightly. I wrestled my eyes open, and he held something smooth to my lips. When I looked down at it, a little cross-eyed, I realized it looked like a giant pear with silver skin.

“Bite it,” the sabertooth ordered me.

Normally, I would’ve argued.

I was so out of it that I followed the command, sinking my teeth into the soft flesh. The texture was like the pulp of an orange, with a bit of tang to it and even more sweetness.

Slowly, I chewed and swallowed.

“More.” Teris turned the fruit.

I sighed softly, but took another bite, and then another.

Slowly, I continued until I’d eaten the whole thing. It didn’t have a core or seeds, so that made life easier.

He carried me over to the slow-moving river in the corner that seemed to be flowing in a circle, tucking my back to his front and then leaning over. When he filled a massive hand full of water and lifted it to my lips, I reluctantly drank.

“You’re still shaking.” He sounded frustrated about that, but there was nothing I could do to stop it. “What the hell was that?”

“I told you Vevol was dying. She needed to use me as a vessel for the last bit of her magic, so she could infuse it into the land and fae. You’re bigger and stronger, now. Everyone is. Even the klynnas. The forcefield fell, so our land is open wide to whatever else exists outside.”

Teris didn’t say anything to that.

I didn’t blame him; I didn’t know what there was to say.

He carried me back to the wall, and asked, “Will those things hunt you down?”

“I don’t think so. I’m not strong enough to control them yet.” My eyes closed, my breathing leveling out as the exhaustion set in more firmly. He was still holding me, so I leaned my face up to his neck, letting myself enjoy the contact.

“Yet?”

“Have to take a mate again,” I mumbled. “Goddess said so.”

“What the fuck?” he sounded almost outraged.
