“That you were taking me to a dungeon.”

I almost choked as I pulled in front of the main door. I had a garage full of vehicles, one of my few vices. At this point, she didn’t need to learn any of them.

“You’re serious?”

“Actually, yes.”

“You really don’t understand the lifestyle,” I told her.

She swallowed hard and reached for the doorknob. “No, and I don’t want to either.” When she climbed out, I sighed.

The girl was more than a handful.

And she was lying.

I’d made certain I was a keen observer of people. That helped eliminate the possibility of approving those who requested membership for unscrupulous reasons.

After opening the door and ushering her inside, I tossed my keys onto the foyer table, not bothering to turn on a light. I thought for certain she’d follow me into the kitchen. When she didn’t, I returned, leaning against the wall, folding my arms and giving her a stern look. The moonlight drifting in through the stained-glass panels on either side of the door created a hazy glow around her.

Just another reminder how beautiful she was. Even if she should remain off limits, at least after her term of service had ended. I’d provided all the logical reasons why to the dark man inside, but none were decent enough to mention. “I don’t bite, sweetheart, at least not normally. However, you’re going to cease being difficult. Right now.”

“Difficult?” she repeated. She was nervous around me, as if I’d eat her alive.

“Very much so.” I waited as she took several deep breaths, finding it difficult to look into my eyes. This was a side of her I hadn’t expected, conflicted by her need to please me.

“What am I doing here?” she finally asked.

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“Nothing is obvious with you.”

I shook my head. The truth was maybe I hadn’t thought this out very well. “We’re going to have a drink and I’ll show you around the house. If you’re curious, Lark. You’ll have your own room. I have several bedrooms and no, I don’t plan on keeping you in a cage. That is unless that’s what you’d like.”

“You’re crazy if you think that. No woman wants to be locked inside a cage.”

“You’d be surprised.”

“What about clothes?”

I shook my head. “I’ll take you back to your home tomorrow, allowing you to pack a bag. But… only if you lose the attitude. Fair enough?”

Even in the darkness, I could tell she was debating whether my offer was acceptable. If I had to guess, I’d say she made an excellent attorney.

“Fair enough.” As if sensing she’d already broken a rule, she added another word with a sheepish sound to her voice. “Sir.”

“Come with me. If you disobey or hesitate, you’ll lose the privilege to walk.”

“Meaning what?”

“You’ll crawl.”

She opened her mouth to retort then thought better of it.

This time she trailed behind me into the kitchen without hesitation.

I took off my jacket, ripping at my tie as well as several buttons on my shirt. She stood near the massive island, her eyes never leaving me. When I started to roll up my sleeves, I turned to face her. By the shimmer dancing across her cheeks, I could tell she was more curious about the man enshrouded in mystery than she wanted to admit.

“What would you like to drink? Wine?”
