“Training.” As the doors closer, I crowded her space, placing my hands on either side of her and lowering my head. “The true beginning of your foray into the darkness.” I couldn’t help rolling my fingers across her cheek. The way she shuddered was a clear invitation. “Do you trust me?”

Lark darted her eyes back and forth. “Strangely enough, I do.”

“Why strangely?”

“Because you’re a very complex man who hides behind your power and influence. But I think there’s so much more to you than you want anyone to discover for fear of being hurt. That’s the man Jameson admires.”

I cupped her jaw, rubbing my thumb across her lips roughly. “A budding psychiatrist along with a brilliant attorney. A dangerous combination.”

“I think you’re the dangerous one,” she whispered, her heated breath tingling.

“Without a doubt.” I captured her mouth, sweeping my tongue inside, the taste of her a powerful aphrodisiac. I yanked up her skirt, exposing the sexy red thong I’d personally selected. When I pushed my hand between her legs, I was forced to swallow her moans, my entire body tense from need.

She wrapped her hand around my cock, stroking through the material.

I would have fucked her right there had we both not heard a woman’s voice directly behind us.

“A-hem. Sorry to interfere.”

I tore my mouth away from Lark’s, both of us gasping for air. When I glanced over my shoulder at Anastasia, the evil grin on her face made me growl. “You have perhaps the worst fucking timing of anyone I know.”

“Hmpf. I’m not the one fucking in the employee elevator,” Anastasia threw back, giving me a hateful look before turning her attention to Lark. “You must be Lark. I’m Anastasia. Mr. Grumpy here is my boss.”

While Lark’s cheeks flushed initially, she laughed softly and adjusted her skirt. “Nice to meet you. Anyone who can work for Mr. Grumpy successfully is a hero in my book. I think I like you.”

“Great. Now, there’s two of you,” I muttered.

“One piece of advice,” Anastasia continued. “The man is possessive by nature. Once in his clutches, he might never let you go.”

While the two women laughed, I tugged Lark from the elevator, pulling her behind me.

However annoyed I was with Anastasia, she knew me well enough to speak the truth.

There was no such thing as love at first sight, a notion spun in ridiculous fairytales, but I was the kind of man who’d been struck by need so all-consuming that I couldn’t breathe.

This time, I refused to allow anyone to get in my way.

I was the most powerful man in the city, and I took what I wanted.

Now that included Lark Winston.

CHAPTER15

Lark

Why did every kiss, every brush of Lachlan’s fingers ignite me so intensely? The feel of his hard length as he’d pressed up against me had scorched my entire system. Now I was breathless as he led me through the hallowed halls of the club. Whereas I’d felt terror the night he’d shown me the club before, tonight was all about excitement.

I hadn’t told him everything Jameson had said, albeit I’d read into the man’s gestures and quips as I always had. What had struck me so quickly was the utter admiration Lachlan’s friend had for him. Maybe the reason for my intense connection with the man had to do with the experiences in our respective pasts. Citing me too incorrigible to deal with, my father had proposed sending me away when I was ten.

Send her to boarding school to learn some manners.

Europe had been mentioned at first. Thank God my mother had intervened. A few years later, I’d been California bound for four years. Then I’d headed off to college immediately afterward. No wonder Lachlan was like a lion in handling every aspect of his work, more passionate than anyone I’d ever met. He’d been forced to live life mostly on his own.

My thoughts drifted to Jeff and the way Lachlan had immediately bristled even as the man had approached. He was definitely possessive in nature.

I rubbed my hand down the corset. I’d told him the attire was loathsome, but it had been a lie. Just like keeping the fact Davidson had been in his house was worse than not telling him a truth. It was killing me but now wasn’t the time.

As he’d done before, he led me to a group room, pulling me inside. The sight of a woman hanging inside a twisted rope cage from the ceiling was more intriguing. I realized I was already trembling, leaning against him for support.
