“The only thing I ever wanted was you. You’re all I ever thought about, dreamt about, and prayed would return. To me. To the girl who thought the sun rose and set by your command.”

“Maybe it does.” He grinned as he shoved the cover to my waist, tweaking my nipple.

“Are you asking me to marry you?” I teased.

“No, I’m telling you. You belong to me.”

“I like the sound of that.” How was it possible that every time he touched me, I was floating on a cloud? As he continued to concentrate on teasing me relentlessly, another icy shiver shifted down my spine.

“Good.”

“Why do they want us dead?”

“Because we’re both threats, Lucia.”

“If we… marry, then what?”

“Then we return to Italy and take what rightfully belongs to us.”

“We can’t be seen near our homes, at least not right away.”

“I own a villa far removed from the mockery of my adopted family as well as yours.”

“Both our families are chasing us. Aren’t they?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes, angrier than I’d been before. “The families are worried that we’ll join.”

“Yes, my beautifulleonessa. So it would seem.”

“Fuck them.”

There was something darkly powerful about the aura surrounding him as his chest rose and fell. “I may have bought us some time.”

I shuddered visibly, uncertain I wanted to hear any additional stories. “You make it sound easy.”

“Nothing is ever easy in the worlds which we were forced into. However, we will prevail.”

“It’s your chance to rule an empire.” I don’t know why his words made me sad.

He pinched my chin as he’d done so many times before, but it felt different this time. “I’d walk away right now, escaping with you into oblivion if that’s what you wanted. Neither money nor power mean anything to me if you aren’t by my side.”

“Does that mean we could live in a shack on the beach?”

He looked so serious. “Yes, if that’s what you want.”

A part of me did while another wanted justice for the man who’d suffered so much both emotionally and physically. I brushed my fingers down his face, still in a state of shock that he was alive. I knew in my heart I couldn’t spend another day without him by my side. “I’ll marry you, D’Artagnan Nicolo Conti.”

I wasn’t entirely certain whether his expression was one of relief, but after he placed his drink on the table, pushing me onto the sofa, I heard the words I’d been longing to hear for most of my life.

I also heard ones that sent a chill boring through my veins.

“I love you, Lucia Lazarro. As I said, you’ve always belonged to me, from the very first moment you rushed inside the barn, gawking at me. If anyone dares try and come between us, I will enjoy watching them suffer.”
