“You don’t need to be.”

I glanced in his eyes. “Danger will always follow us.”

“It will. However, I’ll keep you safe.”

“My hero.”

“No, just the man who loves you.” He backed away, holding up his index finger. “One more surprise. But you’ll need to close your eyes again. I need to trust you.”

“You are such a mean man.”

I adored the stern look he gave me. “Fine. This once.”

He laughed, waiting until I obeyed him. I heard nothing at first, then a slight rustling sound.

“What are you doing?” I pushed.

“Patience,leonessa.”

He tormented me for a full minute before I heard the first sound. Almost instantly tears formed, trickling past my lashes. I didn’t care if I was breaking the rules, I opened my eyes. To hear him playing his guitar, the last song he’d ever played for me left me breathless.

I walked closer, taking several deep breaths. The beautiful song was exactly as I remembered with one difference. He’d put words to the music as he’d been attempting to do before both his and my lives were crushed.

They were words of love, of trust and respect.

And they were written for me.

By the time he’d finished, I couldn’t stop the tears. His smile was bright and after he placed the guitar next to the wall, his swagger was larger than life. “That was okay?”

“Okay?” I punched him playfully. “I’ve waited a long time for you to finish your beautiful song.”

“It was always written for you, Lucia. It was going to be a surprise.”

He kissed my lips gently, his breathing exaggerated.

“You are my everything,” I told him.

“You are my heart, my salvation.”

“So… What if we have a family? Will they be expected to take over the regime?” While my tone was playful, I wanted to know his thoughts.

His eyebrows hitched as he looked at me. “I would hope one of my sons would follow in his old man’s footsteps, but he won’t be forced.”

“Hold on here. What about one of our daughters?”

“We’ll see.” He laughed, the sound filling the oversized space. “I can tell you’ll need to be reminded from time to time that I’m the boss.”

“Uh-huh. I guess we’ll see about that.”

“Hmm…” He rubbed his jaw. “I can tell you need a firm reminder right now.”

“Oh, no, you don’t.” I tried to back away from him, laughing when I almost tripped over the bale of hay near the stall.

D’Artagnan caught me, dragging me against his chest. As he cupped the side of my face, he lowered his head so slowly my breath was caught in my throat. “As I said before, Mrs. DeLuca. You are mine. Mine to tease, to taste. Mine to fuck. And mine to discipline. You better get that through that hard head of yours.”

“Why, yes, sir,” I purred as I brushed my fingers up his chest, using a single finger to toy with his earlobe. Then I rose onto my toes, forcing our lips together. He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck, the hold as possessive as always.

As I melted into him, the kiss becoming a roar of passion, Zorro stomped on the barn floor. There were so many things I’d yet to say to him, wishes and dreams that I still wanted to share, adventures I longed to take him on. Yet we were still captured in a gilded cage, one of opulence and power, but also one of danger and unpredictability.
