“She will agree,” James insists. “I can promise you that.”

“We’ll see,” I say, finishing off my glass of wine and rising from the table with my cigar.

“You’re leaving?” he asks, jumping up with a worried expression.

“I’m afraid so. Business cannot wait for a fickle woman.”

He hurries toward me as I walk to the door. “But remember, you wanted to show me the deed to the uranium mine. I’m still interested in seeing it.”

“You can see it after you bring Taylor to me. Until then, you are entitled to nothing,” I reply firmly as I exit the dining room.

“Just – wait, just stay a little longer. Maybe Taylor will come back down from her room. She seemed interested in you. I’m sure she’ll come around soon.”

I wave him off dismissively, taking long steps to stay ahead of him as he tries to block my path. He’s panting for breath by the time we reach the door.

“My driver is waiting for me,” I say, pursing my lips as his butler comes with my coat. “I’ll be back in Russia tonight, and I will await news about Taylor’s decision. Just understand that I cannot wait for very long. I’m sure there are dozens of others who would gladly trade their American daughters for the deed to my mine.”

“She’ll be wrapped up in a bow on your doorstep by morning,” he says, his eyes bulging out of his head so far that I’m worried they’re going to fall out.

I pat him on the shoulder, causing his knees to buckle. “As I said, we’ll see.”

I step out into the rain, the polish on my leather shoes repelling enough water to get me to my car without soaking my socks.

Inside, I lean back against the headrest, closing my eyes and thinking about Taylor as smoke fills the car. Everything about her body is perfect. If I had her all to myself, I’m sure I could convince her to drop her attitude and her panties at the same time, but James is inadvertently cockblocking me.

I can tell she hates him, and it’s not even just a little bit. She thinks he’s a fool and probably a complete moron, but since he’s paying for her lavish lifestyle, she puts up with him.

Just barely.

I’m sure she wouldn’t be that upset to go home with me, but she needs to be warmed up to the idea. I’m not sure if James will be able to do that, but I know I would if I had the time.

The problem is, I don’t. I’m a busy man, and if James can’t hand over the goods to me in time, I’ll be forced to move on to the next prospect.

It would be a shame, however, to miss out on Taylor. I can already tell what she’d be like in bed – shameless, greedy, and bratty. I like a woman who knows what she wants. Having all the power in a relationship is no fun. I like a little kickback.

Or a lot.

I finish my cigar before ordering my driver to leave the estate. There’s something about the sound of rain on the roof of a car that makes me want to stop what I’m doing and just think, but I can’t stay here forever. James might think I’m not serious about wanting a quick turnaround.

But I am serious.

Deadly serious.

Taylor

I’m seconds away from texting Jacob and convincing him to drive to my window so I can climb out and make a run for it when there’s a heavy knock on my door.

I know my father is pissed at me, but I had every right to react the way I did. What Danya was asking of me was ludicrous. I’m not marrying some stranger from another country, no matter how handsome he is.

“If you don’t open this door right now, I’m going to break it down,” my father shouts.

I groan, walking to the door and throwing it open.

He nearly knocks me over as he charges into my bedroom. “Where’s your phone? Huh? Where is it?”

“What are you talking about?” I ask, bewildered by his behavior. It’s like someone else entirely has taken over his body.
