Flynn, however, is not willing to let up. “Stella, you’re the only woman I know that I could actually pull this off with. We have a rapport. A history!”

“Notthatkind of history,” I retort.

He follows me into the kitchen. “You know what I mean. We’ve known each other for years. It’d be believable that we might have some sort of relationship. I can’t fake it with just anyone.”

I’m so fucking pissed. I can’t believe Colin brought Flynn out here just for this. What was he thinking? I drop the bottles in the sink and turn on the water. The sink sputters and then starts dripping with dark brown water. “Un-fucking-believable.”

“Think of it as a vacation! You get two weeks in the Mediterranean, all expenses paid, everything on my tab and –”

“I am not about to do an amateur theatrical production while stuck with you on a boat pretending to be your girlfriend, Flynn! That’s absolutely –”

“What do you want in return?” Flynn interrupts me loudly.

And that question gives me pause.

“How much do you want? A couple grand? Or –” He sighs. “Please Stella, I’ll do whatever you want if you’ll just agree to do this with me.”

I chew on my lower lip as I consider Flynn’s desperation. Flynn and Colin have been on the cover of every business magazine, back-to-back clad in their suits, staring at you like they know they could buy your tiny little life right out from under you. And right now, he looks like he’s about to fall apart.

God, this guy is a mess.

“An anonymous donation. To the shelter,” I say. “We need all kinds of repairs. Plumbing. The roof. And I’d like to build an addition so we can house more animals.”

Flynn’s eyes move back and forth as he figures out what that’s going to cost him. “Okay. Deal.”

“And…”

“What?” he asks, visibly wincing at what I might do to his checkbook.

“You’re takingherhome,” I say, pointing at Freckles who, unbeknownst to us both, followed Flynn inside.

Flynn looks down at the old border collie. Freckles noses at his knee, looking for pets. He returns his gaze to me. “Seriously?”

I cross my arms. “You want me as your fake girlfriend or not?”

He grunts and crouches down to Freckles level. “Looks like you’re coming home with me, girl.”

Freckles’ tail wags back and forth and her tongue lolls out of her mouth. This has gone better than I expected. “So,” I say with a smirk. “When do I need my bags packed, babe?”

Flynn’s eyebrows jump up, clearly shocked I’m already in character.

This is going to be fun. Or a complete disaster.

Chapter 5

Flynn

Icheckmywatchfor the umpteenth time in the ten minutes I’ve been standing here. Stella’s not even late, but I’m terribly anxious. What if she changed her mind and went back to the States? What if I’m going to be left standing here on a dock at the Port of Piraeus, already sweating in the Grecian heat, doomed to have to force a smile for two weeks while I watch my ex-girlfriend tromp around with her brain-dead fiancé?

I start tapping my foot anxiously and pull out my phone to check our text messages back and forth.

The last one was sent about an hour ago.

Waiting for car now.

But she never saidifshe got in the car. What if while she was waiting she said fuck it and fuck Flynn, I’m going home. That’s not out of the realm of possibility for her.

I knew we should have flown out together. But I wanted to have a day in Athens to rest before this trip which will doubtlessly be the death of me. Stella couldn’t join me, wanting to make sure the shelter was prepared to deal with her absence. She has not let me forget that she’s taking vacation time and sick days in order to go on this trip with me.
