“The princess is shot. Potential second shot,” someone says over the microphones they’re wearing.

I can hear the gunshots in the background and the sound of somebody screaming. Aria is no longer on the screens and I’m wondering where she is and if she’s alright.

“We have to go in there,” I say, getting up from my seat and grabbing my bulletproof vest from where it hangs near the door. “This isn’t going the way it’s supposed to.”

“This is going fine. It’s better that she got shot. If any of our men are discovered, it will look like she is still loyal to her father.” Jameson grins as he watches the screens. “There will be a doctor here soon. We know that her father keeps a doctor on his payroll and he would never let anything happen to his only daughter.”

“You say that as if he doesn’t fucking abuse her already!”

I start pulling the vest on but Jameson stands and gets in my face. He glares at me, his hand on my chest.

“You listen to me, Wilson. You aren’t going in there and that’s an order. I don’t know what has you this worked up but it needs to end now. She’s an asset and you are an agent. If you can’t control yourself, I will have you taken off the case.”

“I’m not going to do anything against the rules.”

“Then sit your ass down.” He looks at his watch. “I have to get home before my wife kills me. You are on stakeout duty. If there are any serious changes, you need to let me know what’s happening immediately. Once everyone has cleared the property, you are to return the van to the office and then go home for the night.”

“Understood,” I say, taking off the vest and hanging it back up.

There is no point in arguing with him. Hewouldhave me taken off the case. This is the assignment that could make my career. I can’t risk being benched for any reason.

I sit back down in front of the monitors, watching as Aria reappears. There is blood dripping down her arm and her face looks pale. I can see her father standing near her, his gun still raised as he asks her something.

Aria shakes her head, gritting her teeth and staring at something else in the room.

Jameson says something I don’t register before leaving me alone with the van. I stare at the screens, watching as people flee across the front lawn of the Russo mansion. There is no doubt in my mind that the Russos will remember who stayed and fought with them and who fled.

Antonio Russo is not a forgiving man.

There are cars pulling up the driveway as others rush out. One of Aria’s brothers would have raised the alarm to the other members of the mafia. Antonio is likely calling a meeting with his capos, preparing his move against the rival mafia.

As long as Jameson’s plan works, everything is set up to hide the involvement of the FBI. Although, Antonio is a smart man from everything that I’ve read. I’m sure he knows there are undercover agents within his organization. He would be a fool to think that there aren’t.

Does he suspect his daughter? Is that why he’s giving her a dark look as the capos start to gather in the room, whispering to each other and looking at the bodies on the floor?

I stare at the screens, watching every movement. Aria doesn’t look like she’s in any immediate danger but if that changes, I have to go in there and get her out. She signed a contract stating that we would keep her safe from her father’s retaliation.

After a few more seconds, one of the capos comes over and starts tending to the wound. I wonder how much first aid training they’ve had. Does Russo make sure that all his men are trained in case the doctor can’t get there?

My heart is still pounding as the doctor’s car appears on the screen displying the driveway. I breathe a sigh of relief, following him across the screens until he is beside Aria and inspecting her arm.

She tries to wave him away, pointing at one of the men on the ground. The doctor glances at her father who shakes his head and gestures at Aria. I watch as the doctor takes her to another room, her mom trailing behind them. I don’t miss the gun sticking out of the thigh-high slit on her mother’s dress. I feel easier knowing that someone in the house is watching over Aria.

I sit in the van for another hour before heading back to the office.

* * *

By the timeI get home, I feel like I’m dead on my feet and the sun is starting to rise over the horizon. What was supposed to be dropping off the van and going home was really filling out five different reports on what happened tonight and downing two coffees.

Not to mention the other agents on the Russo assignment that had to be caught up on the operation status.

As soon as I walk through my front door, I make my way down the hall, kicking off my clothes as I go. I fall into bed, staring up at the ceiling.

A million different thoughts are racing through my mind as I think about everything that happened at the Russo mansion. Aria was put in the line of fire and I knew that was going to happen, but I didn’t expect to be so bothered by it.

She has been nothing but annoying since we met, always trying to get under my skin as if she has something to prove. Although, watching the way she handled Jameson earlier today was a turn-on. It isn’t often that people don’t cower and do what he wants. Jameson is a large and intimidating man.

Aria didn’t care at all. She marched into that meeting knowing that she is the key to our plan.
