She opens her eyes and looks at me with a warm expression. There are tears shining in her eyes but she doesn’t shed them. In that moment, I know. If the FBI can’t save her, she and I will go on the run. We’ll use her connections and we’ll disappear. Because there is no way I’ll ever be able to live without her.

“Loving you scares me too, shitless, but it makes me feel alive at the same time. A life without you isn’t one worth living to me. Not anymore. Not now that I know what life is with you in it.”

“What happens if my father comes for us? Or the FBI?”

“You and I are going to do whatever it takes to be together. There is no future for me without you. I can get another job. We can completely change our identities.”

Her breath catches for a second. “You love me that much?”

Even to me, it sounds unbelievable. When I started the job, she was nothing more than an attractive asset. Before I knew it, she had cast a spell over me, enchanting me forever.

“I love you more than you could ever know. I’m going to spend the rest of my life trying to show that to you. If that means that we have to disappear, then we disappear.”

She looks at me, and in that look, all I see is love.

“You’re the only one I want to spend forever with.”

“Good. You’re stuck with me.”

“That doesn’t mean that you’re going in there alone, though.” She is smiling at me.

“Like hell it doesn’t.” I frown at her. Why does she have to be so stubborn?

“I’ll wear the bulletproof vest, but I’m going in with you.” She fixes me with a steady stare and I know she’s not going to bend another inch. “I know you have it in the trunk. You ran back for that before we left Gio’s.”

“I didn’t run back for it to encourage you to come with me.”

She just stares at me, determination in her eyes.

I shake my head and take a deep breath. “Fine. Put on the fucking vest but if you get yourself shot in there, I’m never going to forgive you for it.”

Aria smiles and leans across the console to kiss me quickly. “Thank you. I’m going to be just fine. Now, let’s go take down a ruthless dictator.”

Her happiness as she gets out of the car, grinning and nearly skipping to the trunk for the vest, is what concerns me. Even though she pretends that she’s alright sending her father to prison, I know that she’s at war with herself over it.

I get out of the car and follow her, helping her into the vest. She runs a hand over her stomach, her lips moving as she says something to herself. My own stomach lurches. The woman I love and our child are about to rush into danger with me, and if I want to keep her safe in the long run, there’s nothing I can do to protect her now.

“Please stay in the car,” I say, cupping her jaw and tilting her head up so I can look her in the eyes. “Protect yourself and our baby.” I have to make a final attempt. If something happens to her, to either of them, I’ll never be able to live with myself.

“Our baby needs their father. You’re not walking in there alone.”

I sigh and nod, kissing her deeply. “I love you, Aria.”

“I love you too.”

“When we get in there, you take the far right and I’ll take the left. We make our way around the perimeter of the building. If you see anyone that isn’t me or isn’t wearing an FBI vest, you shoot first.”

“I know the drill, Tyson.” She smiles up at me but I can see the uneasy look in her eyes. “This isn’t the first time that I’ve had to shoot or kill someone, and I can’t promise you that it will be the last.”

“We’ll meet at the back of the warehouse before we start clearing the rest of it.”

Aria nods and stands on her toes, kissing me again. “I love you. We’re going to get through this together and then we’ll be free to start our lives with our baby.”

“Please don’t die on me. I love you too much to lose you.”

She laughs and kisses me again. Together, we move from behind the shipping container to the warehouse. There are no visible cameras on the building, but I don’t doubt Antonio is watching us. All he’ll see are two people coming for him. He won’t know about the FBI on their way.

The warehouse is dark as we enter through the front door. Even though we both swivel to either side before entering, there are no gunshots. I look at Aria and nod before heading down the perimeter of the building. All it takes is a few more steps before she’s entirely out of sight and the worry sets in.
