“Freeze!” a man yells as he enters the hallway.

I look up at the man and drop my gun. Other agents flood into the building. Shots are firing all around us but I know that there is nothing left for me to do. So I just keep pressing Tyson’s wound with both hands now and hope that’s enough.

The agents surroundTyson and he is rushed out of the building quickly. Jameson steps into the hallway and looks down at me on the ground. I’m covered in Tyson’s blood and my own tears.

I stare at the puddle of blood on the ground. There’s too much of it. There’s more blood on the ground than I’ve ever seen another person bleed. Tyson’s chances of making it are low, and the thought terrifies me.

We were just starting to figure out what our lives were going to look like together.

We have a baby on the way.

He might not make it and I might not have the chance to say goodbye.

“What are you going to do with him?” I ask, my voice hollow.

Jameson holds out a hand and helps me to my feet. “They are going to take him to the hospital and rush him into surgery. In the meantime, you and I have a lot of talking to do.”

“I want to go with him.”

Jameson’s hard gaze softens slightly. “I’m afraid that can’t happen right now. We have a lot of information to go over and several statements to make. I need to talk to you while everything is still fresh in your mind.”

“And the deal we made?” I ask, knowing that all of this will have been for nothing if Tyson dies and I go to prison. “Does it still stand?”

Jameson sighs and looks around at the other agents. “You and I will discuss that later. You need to come with me now.”

I nod and follow him. There is nothing else I can do. I know that they’re never going to let me go with Tyson. Especially not after Jameson hints about canceling our deal.

There’s a chance that I could argue with him if I wanted to, tell him that it isn’t fair and that there was a contract signed. That won’t do any good, though. I knew when I agreed to work with the FBI that they couldn’t be trusted.

They just proved me right.

And honestly, I’m tired. Tired of running. Tired of trying, Tired of hurting.

My fight is over.

TYSON

The incessant beeping is starting to get on my nerves. Every few seconds there is another beep that feels like a knife through my brain. My entire body aches, but my head feels the worst.

I groan as I open my eyes. My throat feels scratchy and dry. The bright lights above make me want to shut my eyes immediately, but I keep looking around. I need to know where I am and what’s happening.

Where is Aria?

The last thing I remember is her scream. It echoes in my mind over and over again. It’s a sound that I never want to hear again, but my mind won’t let me forget it.

The beeping of the machines starts to increase as I try to look around. My eyes are still adjusting to the light and everything seems like it’s shadowed.

“Whoa,” a soft voice says. Hands land on my shoulders and push me back down gently as I try to sit up. “None of that. You’re supposed to be healing, not trying to sit up.”

“Aria?” The world around me starts to come into focus and the first thing I see are the tears in her eyes. I panic. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Are you hurt? Is it the baby?”

“No, it’s okay. We’re doing okay. Better now that you’re awake. I’m just happy you’re okay.” She kisses me, the salty tears mingling between us. As she pulls away, she reaches for a glass of water and holds a straw to my mouth. “Drink some of this.”

I take a couple of sips of the water before relaxing back into the pillows. It’s only then that I feel the pain in my torso.

“How bad is it?”
