I’m trying to establish the Russo family in a new location. While Sofia does still have members of the cartel out here, Brennan is the best connection I have.

That means that I have to do everything in my power to protect Brielle until he returns.

Brielle glances back at me, her eyes narrowing. Like she’s trying to pick me apart at the seams. Finally, she sighs, her shoulders sagging and her gaze dropping.

“I keep getting messages on my photography accounts. They’re nothing. Just someone trying to mess with my head, I think. My accounts aren’t connected in any way. I don’t use the same usernames or any links to my old accounts. I make sure I’m careful.”

I sit up a little taller and look at her, my feet hitting the ground as I lean forward and put my glass on the table. “What kind of messages?”

“Just messages.”

“Brielle,” I say, glaring at her slightly. “If I have to wrestle that phone away from you to see what’s going on, I will.”

I don’t miss the fleeting look of desire in her eyes as she stares at me or the hard frown that settles into place.

“Whoever these people are just keep saying that they know who I am. It’s impossible, considering all the precautions I take to remain anonymous.”

“Then why haven’t you told Brennan?”

She shrugs, reaching up to take her hair out of its tie. “I don’t know. It doesn’t seem worth it. The messages really are nothing. If he knew about them, then he would want to stay here.”

My jaw tightens as I look at her. She is protecting him at the risk of her own life. And even though she is sure that she’s hidden herself well, it’s possible that she overlooked something. There might be some crack the people who are after her slipped through without her noticing.

“I’m calling my security team first thing in the morning. They’ll probably take a few days, but from now on, you are not to leave this house without me, are we understood?”

I stand up and look at her, watching as her chin juts out slightly. Her protests are on the tip of her tongue but they die there.

“Good. Glad to see that we’re on the same page about all of this,” I say as I turn and head for the door.

As I walk away, she mutters something under her breath but I don’t catch it.

That’s probably for the best. She’s going to piss me off more than enough in the coming weeks with Brennan gone.

Hopefully, both of us survive until then.

BRIELLE

Aweek spent barely leaving my house is starting to get to me.

Every time I think about going out, Salvatore shows up at the door with his arms crossed and that stupid stern look on his face. He’s made it clear that he thinks he can tell me what to do, even though I’m not his responsibility.

Still, each time he shows up, there is a little part of me that gets excited. I think about the night at the waterfall when I see him, replaying it in my head until I’m needy and aching.

I’m not doing myself any favors by getting worked up, but at least it’s something to entertain me for a little bit.

Since I’m stuck as a prisoner of my own home.

I groan as Salvatore walks into my house, using the key that Brennan gave him. He looms over the couch, looking at me as I flip through the pages of my book.

“I thought I told you to be ready for the security team showing up today?”

I shrug and flip the page. “I was. I got out of bed and put clothing on. That’s enough.”

“Brielle, why do you insist on making everything about this so difficult? I am just trying to help and make sure that you stay alive.”

I scowl. “I didn’t ask for this.”
