BRIELLE

Salvatore hums as he drums his thumbs on the steering wheel, looking out at the coastline as we reach the tiny beach town we’re going to be staying in for the next few days. I still don’t know how I managed to convince him.

At first, he didn’t like the idea of leaving town and coming to the beach house with me. After pleading with him for several days and saying we both needed to relax after dealing with those bodies, he finally agreed.

Although, if I’m being honest, I’m pretty sure that Brennan called him. Salvatore won’t confirm the suspicion one way or another.

“So, you really think that it’s a good idea to get out like this and away from home?” Salvatore asks as I lean out the window with my camera and take a few pictures of the surrounding landscape.

“I like to get away every now and then. It’s one of those things that makes me feel like a normal person for once. Plus, the little cottage on the beach is Brennan’s. There’s no worry about whether or not the building is safe or armed.”

Salvatore nods and looks at the GPS. “We’re going to be there soon. Is there anywhere you want to stop before?”

I slide back into my seat and shake my head, flipping through the pictures I took. “No. I have more than enough food in the cooler in the back for both of us.”

“Alright, well, I’m going to be doing a check of the building once we get there. I was less than impressed with the protection on your house to begin with. I doubt that a cottage on the beach is going to be much better. If there is something wrong with the security of this place, I want to know before we get stabbed in our sleep,” Salvatore says as he turns off the street and onto a private road.

“You’re being dramatic.”

“Says the one who has people after her. Last time I checked, you were the one with a death sentence hanging over your head.” Salvatore looks over at me, giving me one of those stern looks that sends a rush of heat to my core.

“There are people who want to kill you too. Or do you not remember the way I saved your life?”

He laughs and shakes his head. “I remember. That’s the only reason why I agreed to this insane idea. You’re the only person I know who wants to take a vacation when people want to kill her.”

I shrug, my chest constricting slightly. “This is one of those free things I can do that actually makes me feel like I’m free to live my life.”

The little cottage appears on stilts above the sand dunes. I smile, a sense of peace washing over me as I look at the waves.

“I’m going to be fine on my own, you know that, right?” I ask as he parks in front of the house and turns to face me.

“I know,” Salvatore says, his tone gruff. “I’ve been figuring that out a lot more lately.”

“Well, disposing of bodies together will do that to people. I didn’t think that you and I would ever do that together, but now that we have, I really feel like we’ve bonded.”

Salvatore rolls his eyes. “Have you ever considered not being sarcastic?”

“Face it, grandpa,” I say as he gets out of the truck and helps me pull my bag and cooler from the bed. “You’re getting older now. I understand that the sarcasm is hard to understand with your ageing brain.”

Salvatore scoffs and hoists my bag and his over his shoulder before picking up the cooler. “And here you are, calling me old.”

“You’re older than me by eleven years. Of course I’m going to call you old.” I smile at him and grab my camera bags from the backseat of the truck. “If you want me to stop calling you old, maybe you should stop being old.”

He looks over his shoulder at me as he reaches the bottom of the stairs. “You didn’t seem to have a problem with how old I am when my cock was in your mouth.”

My cheeks heat as I shrug. “Eyes were closed.”

“No, they weren’t.” Salvatore climbs the stairs to the front door. “Not the entire time. Hell, I remember the way you looked at me when you traced my cock with your tongue. You were loving it. I think what we’re trying not to admit here is that the age difference turns you on.”

I laugh as I brush by him and unlock the door, letting him inside. As we step inside, I glance around the little cottage, making sure that nothing is out of place. The building is cozy and looks like it belongs on the coast. Most of the cottage is decorated with neutral colors that make it the perfect place to relax.

“Thank you for carrying that stuff up,” I say as I take the cooler from him and head to the kitchen. “Your bedroom is going to be down that hall on the left. Mine is right across the hall.”

Salvatore takes off with our bags, depositing them in either room before coming back into the living room. He looks around for a moment, his gaze lingering on the cameras that are stationed in the corners of the room.

“Do cameras look outside too?”

I nod. “Yeah, there are some blind spots, but most of the property is under surveillance.”
