BRIELLE

Sofia looks through some of the files spread across her desk before running her hand through her hair. When she looks up at me, there is a bright smile on her face though it doesn’t meet her eyes.

For the millionth time in the last two days, I feel like everybody is hiding something from me.

Every time I ask Salvatore about what is going on, he is purposefully evasive with his answers. He spends most of the day somewhere else in the estate, and when he finally returns to the main part of the house later in the evening, he doesn’t say much.

It’s starting to piss me off.

“Alright,” I say, dropping into the seat across from Sofia and crossing my arms. “I might be pregnant, but I’m neither blind nor dumb. Whatever it is you all are hiding from me, it better not make my life more dangerous.”

“I’m not going to bother lying to you but I’m not going to tell you the truth either. It’s not my business to tell.”

I roll my eyes. “We’re sitting in the headquarters of the cartel you run, and yet you are going to tell me that you can’t tell me what’s going on?”

“I may be the head of the Alvarez cartel and married to the leader of the Russo mafia, but that doesn’t mean that I have authorization to tell you anything.”

I study her for a moment, my mouth pressing together in a thin line. “So, Salvatore is the one hiding something from me, then. I figured he knew what was going on.”

“You know, if he is keeping secrets — and I’m not saying that he is — then there is probably a good reason for it.”

“I want to believe you but I know what he’s like.” I look out the window and watch the children chasing around one of Sofia’s men. “He keeps secrets from the people he cares about. He’s closed off and guarded. Nothing I say to him is going to change that.”

Sofia leans back in her seat and crosses her arms. “Tell me something, Brielle. Do you love him?”

“I don’t see what that has to do with anything.”

She smiles and shakes her head. “Both of you are too alike, you know that? I swear, when I’m talking to you, I feel like I may as well be talking to him. Both of you need to do yourselves a favor and put aside your shit.”

“What does this have to do with whatever you guys are hiding from me?”

Sofia shrugs. “Not a whole lot. You don’t need to know right now. I’m sure that Salvatore will tell you in time, but it’s not something you need to worry about. You need to spend some time relaxing after everything you’ve been through.”

“I wish that everyone would stop telling me that I need to relax. I don’t need to relax. What I need is someone to tell me what the fuck is going on around here.”

“All in good time,” Sofia says as she closes the files in front of her and puts them back in her desk. “Now, let’s go back to the Russo estate and get some dinner. Tyson is cooking and he makes an amazing schnitzel.”

She gets up and heads to the door, giving me an expectant look. I stand and follow her out of the Alvarez headquarters and to her car, a million different questions running through my head. When I think about all the things that they could be keeping from me, I want to scream.

I’m tired of being treated like I can’t handle myself.

I would have thought that killing six people after being taken hostage would have been enough to prove myself, but I guess I was wrong.

As I sit in the car, staring out the window, I try not to focus on what they could be hiding. My hand drifts over my stomach as I try to relax.

Once I see Salvatore later tonight, he is going to have some explaining to do.

“What the fuckdid you do to your hand?” I ask when Salvatore walks into our room later that night.

His knuckles are slightly swollen and bleeding. “More interrogations. We have some pictures of people that I want to show you.”

“What do you mean?”

He sighs and shrugs. “We think the people who are after you know you personally.”
