At least Matteo is home and watching over Brielle.

The woman shakes her head. “I swear, she came out loving milkshakes.”

“What do you want?” I ask, glancing past them to gauge the distance to my car.

Even though I want to find out what they want, there is a larger part of me that wants to get back to Brielle immediately and make sure that nothing is wrong with her.

I can’t tell her that they are alive.

Watching her break down the other night at the thought of them even being alive weeks after their supposed death was hard. I don’t know how I can tell her that they are alive now.

“I’m going to make this as simple as possible,” the man says as he takes a step closer to me, pushing his jacket to the side to reveal the gun on his hip. “You give us our daughter and you’ll never have to see us again.”

“Not going to happen,” I say, glancing at the gun before looking up at him. “You’ll have to kill me before you get to her.”

“Don’t you think it’s convenient that she attached herself to a member of the Russo mafia?” the woman asks, tucking her hands into her pockets. “Haven’t you ever wondered about what she would be doing with someone like you?”

I study them for a minute, wondering how long they have been following her and how much they know. Brielle didn’t attach herself to me. It’s clear that they don’t know the specifics of what I’m doing with her, though I have no doubt that they know about Brennan.

“She takes such pretty pictures too,” the man says, a sinister tone to his voice. “She’s quite clever about hiding her identity and location. It always takes us months to track her down again.”

“Great, well, you know where she is right now, so what are you doing wasting your time here?”

The woman smiles. “We all know that we can’t march in there and take her. You have the Russo mafia and the Alvarez cartel watching over her.”

“And that’s a problem for you,” I say, taking a step toward them. “Because you left the Alvarez cartel, and from what I’ve heard, they’ll kill you if they see you. Hell, it sounds like they would kill you if they knew you weren’t dead. Right now, it’s just speculation that you’re alive.”

The man frowns and steps to the side. “Tell my daughter that I’ll be seeing her soon.”

I lean closer to him. “Over my dead fucking body.”

Even though I can feel their eyes on my back as I head to the car, I don’t bother to turn around. I need to get back to the estate and talk with Sofia immediately.

Matteo is waitingin the front yard when I pull up to the estate. His hand hovers near his gun as his gaze focuses on the road. I look in my mirror and see a black car drive by, the windows tinted so dark that I can’t see inside.

Though I can’t see who’s inside, I know it’s Brielle’s parents.

“Want to tell me what is going on?” Matteo asks as I get out of the car. He takes the tray of milkshakes and starts walking back to the house.

“Her parents are in town. They’ve been watching her since the day they died. I think. I can’t be certain yet, but they want her.”

“What the hell do they want with her?”

“Don’t know. Normal people would have gone deeper into hiding. They were out in the open and they want her. My guess is that they want to use her as a bargaining chip with Sofia.”

Matteo nods. “Well, you deal with Sofia. I’ll go make sure that Brielle is entertained. I think she wanted to spend some time exploring the property.”

“Don’t take her to the lake. I want to show her that myself.”

“Sounds good. I’ll call you if anything happens.”

He goes to the living room where I hear Brielle laughing with the kids and my other brothers. I take a sharp turn and head into the kitchen where Sofia is making birria for dinner. The kitchen smells amazing as I take a seat at the kitchen island.

“What’s happening?” Sofia asks, looking up from the garlic she is chopping. Chiles are cooking in a pan of oil on the stove. “You look like you’re going to kill the next person that pisses you off.”

“Close. Brielle’s parents are alive. I just saw them.”
