“You know that isn’t going to go over well,” Gio says as he gets up and heads over to the bar cart, pouring himself another drink.

“Someone has to tell him,” I say as I hit the call button.

Aria glares at me again and crosses her arms. “Funny that you can tell him but you won’t tell Brielle.”

I flip her off and walk out of the room as the ringing begins. Aria has a point, but I don’t want to think about that right now. Brennan is going to be more than enough to deal with.

“It’s a little late for you to be calling, isn’t it?” Brennan asks, his words slightly slurred as the call connects. There is music pounding in the background and I can hear people laughing. “What’s up?”

“Brennan, I think it’s time that you think about coming home. We have a problem.”

“What kind of problem?” he asks, sounding completely sober as the music and laughter fade away. “I thought that you could handle everything that would happen while I was away.”

“Her parents are alive. She doesn’t know.”

“You can’t tell her. You have no idea what that will do to her.”

“I know,” I say, sighing as I enter the kitchen and lean against the counter. “That’s why I need you to come home. Her parents are after her and if something happens to me, she’s going to need you.”

“I’ll be on the next plane home.” He groans as a gunshot goes off in the background. “Maybe not the next plane home, but I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

He ends the call as I push off the counter. This isn’t the way watching over Brielle was supposed to go.

I’m not supposed to kill her parents to make sure my child is safe. They belong to the cartel for punishment.

However, they’re putting Brielle and our baby in danger.

If I get half a chance, I’ll kill her parents and deal with the repercussions from Sofia later.

Nobody threatens my family.

BRIELLE

Matteo shakes his head as I hold up another option for a baby outfit. When I go to reach for another, he makes a face before I can even hold it up.

This is the first chance I’ve had to leave the Russo estate in days and he is making shopping miserable. Everything I try to pick out for the baby, he has an opinion about.

“How about this?” Matteo asks, holding up a little faux leather vest. “We could put the family patch on the back. Could get a denim one to go with it.”

“My baby is not looking like a thug from the start. I want the baby to have at least a little bit of a normal childhood.”

“The baby is never going to have a normal life. It’s a child of the mafia.” He sighs and his shoulders slump slightly. “I like you, Brielle, but you need to realize what this life really is. I know Brennan has prepared you, but I think he’s also sheltered you from too much.”

“You have no clue what’s happened in my life.” I put the little onesie back on the rack and looked at the vest. “Matteo, what the hell is going on? You’ve been glued to my side for the last three days. As much as I like you, it’s starting to drive me insane. I want a bit of freedom.”

“He might not know what your life is like, but I do,” a soft voice says behind me.

I turn around and my heart freezes in my chest. My mom, my supposedlydeadmom, is standing in front of me.

“This is impossible,” I say, a flurry of emotions rolling through me. “You died. I was there.”

“I am alive, and so is your father.” Mom gives me a cruel smile as Matteo shoulders his way around me. He plants himself between us, his hand drifting to the gun in his waistband. “Although, it’s probably time to tell you that he isn’t your father. And I’m definitely not your mother.”

It feels like someone is driving a knife deep into my body.

“What are you talking about?” I look up at Matteo. “Did you know about this?”
