Our position feels oddly domestic and innocent, but I like it. There hasn’t been much domestic or innocent about my life.
Brielle nods and closes her eyes as I wrap my arms around her. “I will.”
“Well, your parents are technically Sofia’s to punish. They turned their back on the cartel and tried to screw them out of a lot of money. I’ve been talking to Sofia a lot about what to do with them. She’s agreed to give them over to me when we catch them.”
“Give them over to you for what?”
I swallow hard. “I’m going to kill them for what they’ve done to you, Brielle.”
Her breath hitches slightly. “I want answers from them first. I want to know why they did this. I deserve to know why they fucked up my life. I want to hear it from them.”
“I don’t know if that’s going to be possible. They’re not exactly going to be in a great mood when we find them. They’ve already had some issues with a few of the people tracking them. Brennan was shot. Nothing bad, but they’re not exactly taking our pursuit of them well.”
“Brennan’s in town? He’s still supposed to be in South America for another few weeks.”
“I called him back early. This is something that’s bigger than just my family, and if we’re going to keep you safe, he needs to be kept in the loop. That’s easier to do if he’s operating out of the same city with us.”
She sighs and twists around to look at me. “I appreciate all the help, but this is my problem, Salvatore, not all of yours. I should be the one to deal with them. You would have never been involved in this if Brennan hadn’t asked. I’m the one they want. I should be the one to end this.”
I shake my head. “There is no way that you and our baby are getting in the middle of this. Over my dead fucking body.”
Her eyes narrow. “That can be arranged.”
“Funny. It’s not happening, Brielle.”
“Itishappening. I deserve an explanation and then I deserve to be the one to kill them for all the hell they’ve put me through. They robbed me of my true life. But that wasn’t enough for them. They also stalked me, Salvatore. They made me think that they were going to kill me for witnessing their death. They left me alone at twelve years old to fend for myself. And then, to top it all off, they beat me black and blue and could have hurt our baby.”
“It’s a bad idea. You’d be putting yourself and the baby at risk.”
“You would protect us. Please. I’m not asking to do this alone. I know you would never allow it. What I am asking for is that you allow me to be there. To question them and then kill them.”
“Do you really think that you can kill your parents?”
“I don’t just think that I can. Ineedto. I need to be the one to put an end to this. I need to be the one to take back control over my own life, Salvatore.”
I sigh and hold her a little tighter. As much as I want to prevent her from going with me and hunting down her parents, I would want the same opportunity if I were in her position.
Hell, when it comes to taking back control of your own life, I know exactly where she’s coming from.
It’s why I can’t deny her.
“Alright, you can come.” I look up as the sound of a dirt bike echoes around us.
Matteo crests over a hill before heading toward us. He parks the bike beside the ATV and gets off, yanking off his helmet and hanging it on one of the handlebars.
“We have a location for the parents,” Matteo says, looking at Brielle and giving her a small smile. “I’m going to be heading out but Tyson and Aria are going to stay with you.”
I groan and get to my feet, reaching a hand down to pull Brielle to her feet.
“There’s been a slight change of plans,” I say as I look at him. “Brielle is coming with us.”
His eyes widen and his mouth drops open. “What?”
“She’s coming with us.” I turn to Brielle and cross my arms. “You have to stay with either me or Matteo at all times. No going off on your own. You have to wear a bulletproof vest and if one of us gives any sort of command, you have to listen. I don’t want to lose you or any member of my family because of your stubborn streak. Deal?”
She rolls her eyes at me but nods. “This is my family now too. I’m not going to let anything happen to any of you if I can do something to prevent it.”
I nod and head toward the ATV. “Let’s go kill some parents.”
