“You are,” the woman said. She focused some more and realized it was a nurse next to her. “You were in a car accident and have just come out of surgery.”

“What?” she said. Then she started to gag. Damn, she felt as if she was going to throw up.

“Lie back. Drink this. It will help. Let me give you something for nausea.”

She saw the straw come to her mouth and took it, then sipped. It tasted like ginger ale and she wanted to slurp it all down but didn’t.

The nurse put it down and was pushing something into her IV, but then bringing the straw back to her lips. “Can I hold it?”

“Sure,” the nurse said. “If you can.”

She wasn’t sure why they thought she couldn’t hold a can and brought her right hand up to get it. There were IVs taped to her hand, but she didn’t care. She just wanted to drink. The nausea was going away too. “What happened to me?”

“As I said, you were in a car accident. You’ve suffered a concussion. Not sure if you got it from the airbag when it deployed or not. You’re going to have some nice raccoon eyes that are starting now.”

“Great,” she said. “Guess it’s a good thing I had my contacts in or my glasses would have been busted.”

“I believe your roommate is here with your glasses. Your parents too. They will be in soon.”

“Why are my parents here?” she still was trying to figure out what was going on. “What time is it?”

“It’s seven.”

“At night?” she asked.

“Yes. The accident happened around eleven, but it took a few hours to get you into surgery, which lasted a few hours too. They had to run tests to make sure there weren’t any other injuries since you weren’t conscious.”

Her head went back on the pillow. Even that small movement hurt. “Surgery for what?”

“Your leg was broken in a few spots. It’s been repaired, but you’ll be here for a day or so.”

“Great,” she said.

The nurse laughed. “They are getting your room ready. Are you up to seeing your parents or do you want to wait?”

“You can send them in. I need my glasses though.”

“I’ll make sure your roommate gives them to them if she hasn’t.”

“Thanks.”

The nurse left and she closed her eyes. She was so tired and just wanted to sleep, but she had so many questions. Not that she thought her parents would know the answers, but maybe they would.

It didn’t take long for her parents to come running in, her mother gasping. “Oh my God, your face.”

She reached her hand up. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s swollen and you look like you’ve got two black eyes.”

“Jill,” her father said. “They said that would happen from the airbag. Relax.”

“The nurse said I broke my leg?”

“Yes,” her father said. “A nice young doctor came out to tell us he repaired it and put a plate in. You’ll see him again and he’ll explain it all.”

“No,” her mother said. “She isn’t going to see him again because she is going home with us. We can find a doctor at home for her.”

“No,” Heather said. “I’m not going home. Why would I go home? I’ve got a place and a job here.”
