“I know you think this has to do with my mother,” he said.

“I’m positive it does, but I think it’s more. The question is if you’ll be honest with me.”

“I’ve always been honest with you,” he said.

“Then tell me what is going on or we get nowhere. It’s like we’ve said before… How you fight means more. We are fighting.”

“I was dating someone a few years ago,” he said.

“Okay. Did she cheat on you?”

His lips got tight like he was fighting from saying everything. That was only pissing her off more.

“I was the other guy,” he said. “She was dating someone else and I had no idea. I should have seen it and didn’t.”

“And you blame yourself for being human?” she asked. “And making a mistake.”

“It’s not a mistake,” he said. “I know better and was looking for it and didn’t see it. It just told me that you can be blindsided when you least expect it.”

There was part of her that felt for him hearing that. But she wasn’t like the other women he’d been with or around.

“And you thought it was happening again?” she asked.

“Yes,” he said.

“I’m not sure how many times I have to tell you I’m not that way. You need to figure it out on your own, but I’m not going to sit here and defend myself for doing nothing wrong. Lonnie is the subject of the mean girls in our office. All the time. Nonstop. He doesn’t talk to anyone because they always beat him down when he tries.”

“But not you?”

“No. I’ve been the outcast before and get it. I won’t treat someone like shit. But I’m not going to feel bad if someone else thinks there is more to it than it is, because I know the truth.”

Her arms were crossed. His face flushed.

“Heard,” he said.

“Now what?” she asked.

“Now I’m going home. I need space.”

“Guess I do too,” she said when he walked out the door. She wanted to pick up something and throw it at the door. Instead, she let out a loud growl that had Fred doing the same thing.

Any other day she’d laugh over that. This time, she cried.

His Problem

The last place Sawyer wanted to be was the Fierce Fourth of July party. But he’d said he’d be here and he was true to his word.

If he didn’t get much sleep last night running everything in his head, that was his problem.

They got to the party early. The immediate family was there for Regan and Cameron’s third birthday party. He was introduced around and had to put a smile on his face. Or his version of one.

His grandparents weren’t here yet and he decided to escape from everything going on and visit. He didn’t think anyone would notice he was gone.

“Sawyer, what are you doing here?”

“I needed to get away for a minute.”
