He hung up on her and she went to go sit on the couch and figure out what to watch on TV. Her conversation out of her mind. But not the sexy detective. He was going to be on her mind all night just like he’d been for weeks. And now she got to see him with facial hair and without because he was clean-shaven this morning and oh, so sexy that way too.

Call It Fate

Sawyer showed up at the restaurant he’d suggested in downtown Charlotte days later. It was five-fifty and he’d managed to get here ten minutes before, which for him was early. Normally he was right on time and most women thought that was late and gave him shit.

More than once he’d had a woman say she wasn’t important enough for him to be early.

He learned fast those women had no place in his life.

He wasn’t his father. He wasn’t going to tolerate any woman telling him he wasn’t putting them first whether he was trying or not.

Shit happened in life and if they couldn’t get over it, then too damn bad.

Because Faith seemed a little OCD like him, but with different things, he wasn’t sure how this was going to work, but he’d find out.

Five minutes later, he saw her open the door. “Hi,” she said, frowning. “Have you been waiting long?”

“No,” he said. “A few minutes. I’m actually surprised I beat you here. I’m always told I’m late even if I’m on time. I guess I didn’t want to get on your bad side. You know, you said that magic number was two.”

She threw her head back and laughed. “You said I was perfect, but maybe you’re the one that is perfect for me.”

“Huh?” he asked.

“Just two?” the hostess asked.

“Yes,” he said.

They were brought back to a table, their jackets off, and he noticed she had a nice pair of dark fitted jeans on, black heeled boots that went over her calf and a black sweater on that clung to her perfectly.

Nothing was too tight and everything was...perfect.

“So, my comment,” she said. “You want to know what it’s about?”

“I’d like that,” he said. “I told you why I said it.”

“I’ve got this thing about time. My friends all give me a hard time. If someone tells me to be there at six, I’m going to show up no more than five minutes before. Half the time I’m right at six. My friends get mad and tell me I’m late. I said then tell me to be here at five forty-five.”

He grinned. “Yeah. I’m with you. You give me a time. I’ll be there. Sometimes I’ll be early, but not always. There are going to be times I might be late if something comes up with work. Depends on the situation and where I’m coming from.”

“Exactly,” she said. “You get that. My mother told me one day to just mark my calendar fifteen minutes early so it wouldn’t be a problem with my friends. I shouldn’t have to be early. If you tell me six, then six it is.”

He could appreciate that, but many might think she was more structured than their taste. Since he felt the same way, he wasn’t going to complain too much about it. He needed the structure in his job. Maybe he needed it in his life because there wasn’t much as a child.

“I agree,” he said.

The server came over and took their drink orders and gave them the specials for the night, then left to get Faith’s wine and his beer.

He’d gotten a Fierce one since he drank it the most. He almost thought of bringing Faith to Fierce-The Restaurant but figured they’d be waiting for a long time. Not only was it a Friday but before the holiday on top of it and many might be going out to celebrate.

It was busy here too, but not as bad as it could be.

“So tomorrow you’re just going to your partner’s house?” she asked. “I kind of wish I had a quiet day, but it won’t be with my extended family.”

“Yeah. James’s house will be pretty busy though. There will be at least thirty people there I’m sure. No kids though. Even their kids are out for the night at someone’s house. It’s just me and my father and my grandparents on Christmas Day.”

“Not me,” she said. “I’ve got my parents, my brother and his wife. Then I’ve got seven more first cousins and they are all married or engaged or close to it. Lots of kids too. My aunt wants everyone to be at the house or show up at some point on Christmas Eve. I must admit I do love playing with my cousins’ kids, but they will be working, or some of them for a bit tomorrow.”
