He grinned. “You watch a lot of TV, don’t you?”

“You mean it’s not all true?” she asked, cutting into her prime rib.

“It’s true,” he said. “And it sucks, but it’s life. That’s why law enforcement and lawyers don’t always get along.”

“There is a need for both in the world,” she said.

“There is,” he said.

They were eating their dinner when she finally worked up the nerve to say, “So I’ve got an idea with Fred?”

“What’s that?”

“That maybe I could have one of your shirts or something with your scent on it. Something to have at my house more. Keep it on the couch to start.”

“What if he thinks it’s his and takes it with him everywhere?” he asked. “The last thing I need is your dog wanting to go in the bathroom with me.”

She laughed. “Not going to happen. It was just a thought. You know, I figured I could move the shirt around in the house. The couch, a chair, upstairs...”

“Ah,” he said. “Fred sleeps with you, right?”

“He does. I thought maybe if he got used to your scent on or in my bed, he’d be more open. I mean if you want.”

“Oh,” he said. “I want a lot. But I’m letting you figure this out. You know your dog better than me.”

“I know it’s nuts we are doing this around Fred. Not many men would be okay with it.”

“I’m not like a lot of men,” he said as he was eating his steak too. Both of them would bring it back to Fred tonight. Or she would after she left his house later.

“No,” she said. “You’re not. So you’re okay going to your place after we leave here?”

“Sure,” he said. “As long as you don’t judge my place.”

“No,” she said. “I wouldn’t. Are you a slob? Something tells me you won’t be.”

“Not really,” he said. “I’m not there enough to be one.”

They finished their meal and she followed him to his apartment. It wasn’t a fancy complex, but he never said it was. He seemed pretty simple all along.

She parked next to him and got out, followed him to the door where he swiped a card and then climbed the stairs to the second floor. “Are all the buildings separate but connected?” she asked.

“Yes. So eight apartments in my building, but there are eight buildings attached.”

He was in the first building so at least he only had one neighbor on the other side of him. But he had people above and below him. “Is it noisy?”

“Not too bad,” he said. “Depends on the people living there. I’ve been here about five years. I don’t like to move and it suits me for now.”

He unlocked his door and they walked right into the living room. There was a kitchen ahead. Not very updated but not horrible either. The floors were wood and clean, just some shoes by the door and she slipped hers off with his.

“It’s cozy in here,” she said.

He had a big sectional that took up most of the room and that was his only piece of furniture. A TV was on the wall, but nothing else. No art or decorations.

There was a small table off the kitchen and not a lot of counter space. “It works for me,” he said. “I’ve got two bedrooms but one is small. I use it for an office.”

“Do you do a lot of work at home?” she asked.

She wasn’t sure why she was talking about this when all she wanted to do was jump him right now.
