“So I’ve been told recently,” he said.

“Who else told you that?” she asked. She settled on the couch while she talked to Sawyer on the phone. She hadn’t seen him since Sunday when he left her place.

They’d both had busy weeks and she was fine with it.

She’d never had to be around someone nonstop. She enjoyed her alone time.

“James said I had to take you on a date; otherwise I’d be lying to my grandmother. We had dinner after your lunch with them.”

“That was me cooking,” she said. “And I asked you over.”

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“You’re the one who put us in this position,” she pointed out.

“Good point,” he said. “Do we need to go on a date?”

She laughed. She could hear the humor in his voice. “I think it’d be nice, but if it’s too much effort for you, then just say the word.”

“Since I had to cancel on you last night, that would be one. I’m afraid to have two cancellations in a row and have you say it’s not worth it.”

She grinned. “That was early on. I think you’d get a pass at this point.”

“Really?” he asked.

“Yeah, it’d be three instead of two.”

He laughed. “Fine,” he said. “We can go out to dinner this weekend. I’ll let you decide the time and place. Isn’t that the gentlemanly thing to do? You know, since you were cornered and had no escape.”

“That’s right,” she said. “It was me that got the raw end of this.”

“I’m not so sure I’d go that far,” he said.

“You don’t know my aunt like I do,” she said.

“I’ve met her, remember? And that means it’s with my grandmother. This is the first time you’ve had the two of them together.”

She forgot about that. “Fair enough,” she said.

“James says thanks,” he said.

“For solving your case?” she asked.

“Not just that one,” he said. “Though that was nice.”

“I’m sure you would have solved it on your own. All I did was give you fresh eyes and have you test a few more things. I’m sure you would have figured it out at some point.”

“Maybe,” he said. “I’d like to think so. It’s funny, but once we showed up, the guy confessed.”

“That easy?” she asked. “Were you surprised?”

“I actually was. He said that he’d lost a bunch of clients’ money. Some of the not nice variety of people and they were breathing down his neck.”

“Is that the polite way of saying he was being threatened?”

“Yes,” he said. “He knew he had a twin but not many others did. Guess Colin found him last year and though they’d never met before and Cole didn’t care to meet the man he thought wasn’t worth his time.”

“It was his twin,” she said. “I can’t understand that, even if they didn’t grow up together or know each other.”
