“Then the same for me,” he said.

They talked for a few more minutes and got off the phone. She was getting ready for bed when she got a text from her aunt asking if Sawyer had reached out to set up a date yet. She didn’t want to lie or tell the truth, so she decided to not answer at all. Her aunt was used to being ignored by her family.

“Hi, Grandma,”Sawyer said. “You’re calling to see if I asked Faith on a date yet, aren’t you?”

Marci didn’t want to bug her grandson, but it’d been about a week and Jolene had told her Faith wasn’t replying to her texts. Since she was still up and she knew Sawyer often went to bed late, she decided to take a chance he was home and reach out.

“Actually, I am,” she said. “I told her you’d be reaching out and now you’re going to make me look bad.”

“Maybe she was thrilled to not hear from me,” he said. “Did you ever think of that?”

She had felt bad about the way they’d trapped Faith into that lunch, but she wouldn’t admit it to her grandson, though she had said it to Jolene.

“The way you phrased that makes me think you did reach out to her?”

“Maybe,” he said. “Are you going to tell Jolene I did?”

“It depends on what the answer is,” she said.

“Don’t side with your neighbor,” he said, laughing. “I’m your grandson and should come first.”

“You’ll always come first. If you can get your mother and Genevieve out of your head maybe you can see there are nice women out here.”

“Don’t go there, Grandma,” he said.

She knew she probably pushed it by bringing up her grandson’s ex. The last woman she’d known he was dating even if it was for a short period. She’d never met the woman but had heard about her. When she found out they split it was like pulling teeth to get the reason out.

She’d never said the woman’s name again and wasn’t sure why she did just now. Just like she slipped with Jolene when she brought up a possible ex that might have soured Sawyer. She didn’t tell those things to people.

The last thing she needed to do was put anything negative around this whole thing when there were already signs of it to begin with.

Or at least in her mind because she did feel some guilt over Jolene’s plan, even if it might work.

“I won’t,” she said. “Back to Faith. Did you reach out to her? I won’t say anything to Jolene.”

“I don’t believe that because Jolene will probably badger you and you won’t lie. Yes, I reached out to Faith. I told her I’d leave it up to her to pick and a time and place for this weekend. She’ll let me know. Or maybe she’ll blow me off.”

“She wouldn’t do that,” she said. “She was way too sweet.”

“Maybe she’ll do it to spite her aunt.”

Marci hoped that didn’t happen.

No, she had to believe it wouldn’t.

“I’ll let you go then. You will let me know how it goes?”

“Why?” he asked. “I don’t normally do that.”

“I know, but since I played a part in this, if you two don’t work out, I can let Jolene know and then we’ll mind our own business.”

He laughed. “I highly doubt you’ll do that.”
