“Maybe this was a mistake,” I say under my breath, glancing over my shoulder at him.

Just as I expected, Chase’s face is a mask of rage. I can feel it, but more, I can feel I’ve hurt his feelings as well. And even though it shouldn’t matter, I already regret it.

All at once I’m flooded with the desire to escape, to get away. I can't face these emotions, I can't handle the mixed and warring feelings inside me. I want to hate him, but my body screams for him. I shift, my fight or flight kicking into overdrive. I dart towards the cave entrance, digging frantically at the frozen snow. I can’t think straight, I can’t feel too much, I need to get out of this cave and away from this man who confuses me down to my core.

“Ruby, stop!” Chase shouts. “You’ll cause an avalanche, you’ll get trapped!”

“I am trapped! Trapped with you! I’m getting out of here!”

I’m clawing my way through, higher and higher, when the weight of the snow shifts and falls, tumbling all around me. In the blink of an eye, I’m in pure darkness. I can't move, I can barely breathe. Panic sets in, the enemy is behind me and I’m going to die in a pile of snow.

Frantically I try to kick, try to lick and melt the snow, but I can't move at all. Horror sinks into my very bones. I tried to get away from him, get away from these feelings, and I got myself in a situation that I’ll need his help to escape.

I struggle fruitlessly against the snow, growling and yelping, but all I can hear from Chase is his laughter as he himself shifts and meets my consciousness with his own mind. The snow behind me begins to shift, loosen, and I can move my tail. I’ve done it! I moved enough to shift the snow! My victory is short lived, though. Teeth clamp around my tail and yank, pulling me out and dropping me onto the rock floor of the cave. Chase. He pulled me out.

He paces around me, chuckling, shaking his head. His body ripples with amusement, his dark eyes looking at me on the floor as I shiver and look away. I try to get up but he pins me down, growling until I stop fighting him.

“I’m not your enemy!”he screams into my mind, but then his voice goes soft.“Not anymore… Ruby… I know you’re scared and you don’t know what’s happening, but this? This was anything but a mistake.”

I’m trembling, ashamed, and I shift back into my human form and burst into tears. Sitting up, I wrap my arms around my legs and sob into my knees. I’m so confused. I want to believe him. My heart already does. But if it’s not a mistake, what is it?

When human hands touch my shoulders I don't pull away, and he settles his body around mine and pulls my back to his chest.

“Ruby, it’s ok. Really. We can get through this together. It’s going to be hard, sure, but if you need me as much as I feel I need you, then we can do it.”

“Can we?” I shudder. “You don't know my pack, you don’t know my brother. What we’ve done…he’ll try to kill you.”

“Not if I kill him first,” Chase growls, holding me possessively.

Without thinking, I slam the back of my head into his chin. He flies back, landing on his back on the ground and blinking up at me in shock. I’m on top of him before I’ve made a conscious choice, shocked just as much as I am furious.

I straddle his waist, wrapping my hands around his throat in warning. “More anger and killing aren’t the answer!” I shout in his face.

Neither is threatening my brother. The Alpha of Silver Dawn.

Fierce protectiveness heats my blood. If I’m going to care about both of these stubborn men, then there’s no place for this animosity.

Chase blinks up at me, and when his vision clears, there's only lust in his eyes. My certainty wavers as I realize the position we're in.

His cock twitches between my legs. All at once, I’m reminded of what that cock can do.

Chapter5

Chase

This woman is amazing.

Her confidence and pride radiate off her like an aura. Ruby’s protective and formidable. She’ll make someone a powerful mate, one others will envy and fight for, but the thought of her with anyone else fills me with a fury I don’t recognize. I’ve never been possessive, giving myself freely to any mate who wished to choose me for a time, but something has changed.

She’s mine now, irrevocably.

“You are amazing.” I smile at her, hands stroking up her legs as I buck underneath her.

Her jaw drops and she squeezes my throat. She needs to prove she’s strong, but she doesn’t have to be. I’ll be her strength, if she’ll let down her defenses and let me.

She growls at me, twitching as I touch her legs. She’s trying to be mad, trying to defend her pack, but she’s still wet from before. The moment she feels my length stiffen, her eyes grow wide as saucers and she throws herself off of me like I burned her. I have to laugh, rolling over on my side and watching her cling to the cave wall like I’m some heinous monster.

“What is wrong with you! I was choking you! How could you…you…”
