Narrowing my eyes, I walk up to them and pick up the cat as I sit at the booth. There’s always been something special about this little black feline, something almost human. I pet her as I smile at Ruby, my hands ruffling her fur so I can see the little white patch behind her shoulder.

“You’re going to be an amazing mother,” I tell Ruby, watching her play peek-a-boo with the kid. She smiles and blushes, and my heart fills with even more love for her.

“It’s gonna take a village to raise this one, especially if she’ll shift.” Her voice fills with worry as she finishes the sentence and she holds the baby a little bit tighter. “Do you think you’ll find her mother in time?”

“I’ll do everything I can, Ruby. I swear.” I try to smile, worry filling my mind. I need to tell her about the apartment, show her there's light at the end of the tunnel. I gently raise the tiny child from her arms and look at her. She’s got the prettiest little green eyes and just a wisp of soft hair, almost like curly moss. Besides the gash on her pretty face she looks perfect. Gently, I hand the kid back to Cookie and pull Ruby up from the booth. Cookie winks at me—she must already know what I’m going to tell Ruby.

“I wanna show you something,” I tell Ruby, whispering conspiratorially in her ear.

She looks at the baby and hesitates, but I pull her toward the back of the bar. “Do you think Cookie will need help? Should we do something?” she asks, her voice full of worry.

“We’ll be close enough to help.”

“From the trailer? Seriously, Chase, I wasn’t kidding. We can’t raise a baby there. Maybe we can move into the house with Momma?”

I almost gag at the idea, and shake my head, relieved I’m not going to have to go to pink heaven. Pulling her through the doorway to the empty apartment I lean my shoulder on a wall and watch her go from concerned about our living conditions to confused.

“We can help Cookie from here.” I say matter of factly, waiting for Ruby to make the connection.

She gasps and slaps both hands over her face. “We’re going live here?” she asks, her face lighting up as she runs to the kitchen sink and stares out the window that looks over the roof of the bar and the town beyond. “Oh, Chase, this is perfect! We’ll be right here for Cookie the whole time! In the center of it all!”

I watch her with love as she dances around the apartment, gasping at the quaint woodwork and exposed ceiling beams in awe. “I need flower prints, purple pots and pans… Oh! We can put a little table here where we can drink coffee in the mornings!”

“Purple? Not pink?” I laugh as she scowls at me and puts her hands on her hips.

“Royalpurple. It’s distinguished.”

“If that's what you want, Ruby, I’ll make it happen.” I smile and push myself off the wall, grabbing her hand and pulling her into my arms, “I’ll build you your house with my own two hands. This won’t be forever.”

I slip my thumbs through her belt loops and lift her off the ground to set her on the counter. I kiss her neck, I can't help it. We’re in our first home together and she’s so excited, so beautiful… Ruby moans, arching her breasts into my kisses as she leans back and braces herself on the wall. Suddenly all the plans for this place leave her mind, and her hot and heavy eyes tell me exactly what she’s feeling. We need to christen this place.

She pulls her shirt off her body, unclasping her front clip bra and letting her glorious breasts spill out and onto my face as I bury my face in them. They seem bigger already, firmer, or maybe it's my imagination. As I nibble her perfect nipples I unbutton her pants, slipping them down past her waist and to her ankles.

Ruby laughs as I pull off her shoes and throw her pants behind me. The door to the apartment is still open, and her pants fly out the back door to the gravel behind the bar. I don’t care, not even a little bit, all that matters is Ruby.

I straighten up and rip my own clothes off so fast that I hear stitches pop. Ruby watches me hungrily, spreading her legs and letting me see her most secret of places. I groan in anticipation, not waiting to get my pants off my ankles as I push myself between her legs and slip inside her effortlessly.

We gasp, lips brushing as I take her fast and hard. The cabinets are shaking, cups Bob left falling off the counter and shattering around my shoes. Ruby clenches herself, locking me inside her so tight I can hardly pull out. Her face is full of deviousness as she grips and releases my cock, making me go absolutely insane.

I remember my nightmare as my release comes hard and fast, rocking me to my very core. The man in the shadows said if he couldn’t have his happily ever after then no one would. Well I’ll show him. I’ll make Ruby so happy none of his darkness will ever touch her.

I fall to my knees as soon as I finish coming and bury my face between her legs. Ruby moans, hands gripping my short hair as she rides my face. She tastes different, and it’s not my seed inside her. She tastes sweeter, heavier, like the baby growing inside her is changing everything about her even now. My eyes roll back in my head as she moans and screams at the ceiling.

Ruby’s mine, I can taste her like this whenever she lets me.

If that’s not happily ever after I don’t know what is.

Epilogue

JACKSON

This isn’t necessary. It’s adding insult to injury. Not only did I lose Ruby and the chance to raise my standing in the pack, but now I’m living in Chase’s trailer.

“You have to be close, you have to watch her. It’s not that I don’t trust Chase, but it took four of us to take the first beast down,” Cole had said.

So I’m here, watching her, watching someone who was meant to be mine as her stomach grows with someone else’s child.

Walking in the back door of the bar, I feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I’m bigger than Chase, faster, stronger. I was the choice who made the most sense, but no. She chose him. Every time I walk through these doors and I see them living happily ever after it hurts more and more.
